You will find the spark plug gap and timing specifications listed on the vehicles emission label under the hood, and those specifications are the ones to be used on that vehicle and engine for that year, and no other specifications should ever take precedence over the specifications listed on the vehicles emission control label. Here is the firing order diagram for that engine, let me know if you require any further assistance, and I an curious as to how you got taken for $2,000.

Also, if the emission label says that the ignition timing is not adjustable, then the ignition timing is "static" and when the engine is at top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to a #1 position marker that is either on the distributor housing or on the hall-effect pick-up coil/ignition module under the distributor cap (see image) and if the position of the distributor has not been changed then there should be no need to set the timing.

Ignition Module. (located under the distributor cap)

My 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 is starting but will not stay running after I changed the spark plug wires. What could be the problem please?

Question edited for clarity, make name 'doge' to Dodge.
Question moved to sub category.

Check that you have the wires in the correct places to match the firing order diagrams.

We can not figure out why my 1990 dodge ram keeps back firing we replaced the plugs, button, cap, wires and coil and its still back fires

You need to get an exact firing order diaghram for your make, model and engine,

call any autoparts store, and they will give you the firing order for your truck, if one

or more wires are wrong, can cause the engine to backfire or run bad. also make

sure you have the correct gap on your sparkplugs. check and set the timing,

if needed, the auto parts will also have the timing marks position. good luck!

Changed spark plugs and wires on 98 dodge ram. Now it backfires and has no power

Make sure that the firing order was not changed when you took the spark plug wires off of the plugs. You might also want to double check the gap on the plug. Let me know if neither of these were it.
