Rear end noise - 1998 Acura RL

indicates axle bearing failure rather than diff problems
diff failure is indicated by a growling noise on acceleration or deceleration or a constant harmonic hum while driving at a steady speed
from your description of where the noise is most pronounced indicates wheel bearings

Most likely a bearing in rear end. Pinion or wheel bearings. Have a good independent shop install noise sensors located at each bearing location to verify which one it is. Oh yes I'm assuming you have done the obvious check it for proper level of lubrication in the rear end.

I agree the rear end is not the source of the noise, try changing the fluid first in the transfer case.

noises or clunks in rear ends are indications of worn suspension rubbers and other rubber mounted items , drive line joint failures
the front end noise could be brake pad and rotor problems so have them checked by an accredited brake shop

Check rear-end fluid level and play in rear pinion gear.
Check universal joints for play. If play is in pinion gear change rear end fluid and add a full bottle of LUCAS oil stabilizer, will quiet rear end noise.

Yep!!!! Good call on the pumpkin bad!!!!

Id get a mechanic to look at it. Sounds like a rear end bearing problem. Axle bearings pumpkin bearings.

This rear end needs to be replaced or re-built. The gears and or bearings are worn/shot. May be able to get a complete rear end from a Junk yard for much less, one in good condition. Good Luck
