An automatic transmission consists of a series of bands (gears) which is each gear within the transmission. You state that truck will move in reverse, but not in drive. The loud pop you heard was the forward gear band breaking. From this point you have two options...either have the transmission rebuilt or replaced.
Lost your forward gears.that is a real bummer.
Mine did the same exact thing yet kicked right back into gear with no forward or reverse damage. My service 4x4 light was on and my 4low light was on. After the pop, both 4x4 lights went out. Ten minutes later just the service 4x4 light came back on. Now, what's my delima please?
This pertains to a 2005 Dodge Dakota TRX 4.7 liter V8. Positive traction front and rear differentials. What's my problem?
I've got the same issue: loud pop in AWD mode. All torque gone (as though I was in neutral). No 4WD lights.
This happened at a busy intersection: I'd stopped for a red ligh. Then, as I started to move (wheel turned to the right), I heard the pop and the vehicle acted as though it was in neutral. I put on the parking break and walked the vehicle: no signs of damage. I popped the hood, no signs of belt issues or damage.
We tried to push the truck to the edge of the road when I noticed there was no a buzzing noise (sounded like an electrical arc). Still no power. I put the shifter in neutral (wheel straight), then shifted to 4WD high.
All of a sudden I could move! We carefully drove the truck on a roundabout route home and, at one of the intersections we heard the pop again, with a very brief loss of torque (like a second). After driving home, I parked the truck, put it back in AWD, and tried to recreate the issue around my neighborhood: I couldn't do it.
Any ideas? This is an '05 Dodge Dakota, V8, AWD/4WD.
