I think you mean you want to bypass the ignition/starter switch with a toggle switch.
You certainly could with the older vehicles and perhaps with yours, though the security system of modern computerised cars might object.
Try it and see what happens though I caution against using a toggle switch due to the high probability of accidental starter engagement and the resulting damage - a push switch with a strong spring is the best choice.
If you hear the starter motor turning but it does not engage in the engine then changes are you have either a bad starter gear or solenoid. Either way, you will probably need to remove the starter to find the issue.
The security light is an issue that has plagued GM since the 80's. The security light indicates a failure in your antitheft system. It all stems from a signal in that little black chip in your key, It gets read by the ignition lock cylinder, and then sent to the Theft Deterrent Module. (TDM) The TDM is the computer part of the system that receives all the proper signals and then allows the starter to start. Any one of these three parts could be the culprit in your car. The hard part its determining which one. It is possible to bypass this system if so desired. I'm sure the demand for stolen cars from the 90's has subsided a little by now. This link should help you understand the problem and also help if you decide to bypass it. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/
This sounds primarily like a starter on it's way out. The next time the starter will not engage the first time, have someone else hold the key into the start position and you tap the starter with a hammer and if it engages, replace your starter. Let me know if you need instructions on how to do so.
what year is it. If it is just clicking, you might have a problem that plauged gm, your security system could be malfunctioning. there is a way to bypass this, you can find it on youtube. The passlock security system has been a real problem, just go to youtube and type in passlock security system bypass.
hllo theft system problem most of time you need to change the ignition baril with housing its not cheap dealer parts only lots of time i suggest to my customer a remote car starter the system come with theft bypass so car start witout spending at least double or triple the price of a remote starter good luck pierre
wont crank is sign of bad starter or bad battery or connections from positive fat cable to starter. or bad solenoid. or even relay that signals solenoid to engage. also if car shuts off and wont start but cracnks. it could be the pickup coils in distributor, not giving it signal to fire spark or alarm system bypassed wrong
