The fuel filter is inside the fuel tank and is part of the fuel pump / fuel level unit. It is not normally replaced as a maintenance item like an air or oil filter unless there is a problem with the fuel supply. This is not an advisable DIY job. The tank must be removed and flushed of contamination, the fuel pump / filter / pressure regulator / level sensor are usually replaced at this time, and this is all dangerous should fuel be spilled or dripped on a hot light bulb.
Shift modulator on the transmission may be bad, or clogged filter. Maybe time to changed oil and filter. Also a simple adjustment on the trans kickdown cable, or a new cable. The cable can stretch enough to cause a shifting problem.
Hi Corwin, Your vehicle seems very neglected to me. I would suggest a full service, tune up, and inspection to find out what else is needed. First replace oils and fluids and that includes brake fluid. Replace all filters, oil air and fuel. Have the gearbox flushed and the filter in it replaced. Only when the engine is running correctly can the gearbox perform. The gear box will also need repair, as fluid should not leak. Regards John
Look and listen for vacuum leak Free,Change air filter $15, change fuel filter$20, replace fuel pump$300. S With motor running and your head under hood listen for hissing sound. Then start replaceing filters first air filter , then fuel filter. Check fuel pump by listening for humming noise at gas cap when you first move key in ignition to on (when the red lights go on). Have someone listen for you at the gas cap.(NO hum need pump)
try changing spark plugs, servicing the fuel system, air filter, ignition system, oil and filter.try doing a compression test to see how the engine is doing
Is the car runnng quite ruff? It could do with a good service I'd say. New spark plugs will help, oil and air filter change. Make sure there are no leaks in the intake system or the ignition leads. My car was very sluggish when I first got it, turns out there was a leak in the igntion leads, cost about $100 to fix. It's always good for the car to replace the fue filter too and use some injection cleaner afterwards. Oil, air and fuel filter are the best things you can do for it.
Do you mean lacking power only in low gear? or all across the board? I would suggest you use good quality fuel(tier one, not the cheapo bottom barrel stuff); also use a fuel injector cleaner every other tank. Did you remember to change the oil at 3000-5000 miles? i would reccomend synthetic oil, and a good premium oil filter. If that does not work you need a tuneup; did you do one recently? Change air filter, spark plugs etc. hasthe car been gradually going downhill in performance? or was it sudden. if ti was sudden i would still do all or some of the above, plus check if something is wrong in the engine. hope this works; otherwise explain some more how the problem started.
