Hi this sounds like either the power steering pump has seized up and stopped running, sometimes the internal bearing gives up and brakes the internal shaft , thus not circulating the fluid around the pipes for the steering, to check, open hood, start car, locate the steering pump, and see if it is rotating , as if this is seized it will brake the serpentine belt and cause all sorts of problems hope this helps

Make sure the serpentine belt is still on the engine. Sounds like a pulley seized and the belt snapped. The belt runs everything including your alternator which is likely why it isn't running right...eventually it will stall and not start, or, overheat.

if this has an automatic belt tensioner on it this sounds like the tensioner is weak and needs replacing. a weak or bad tensioner does and can cause belt squealing and can throw the belt alignment off causing your problem.

Remove the belt and check those parts. Spin them by hand The alternator should spin freely. The PS pump will have more drag on it. Also check the tensioner and idler pulleys. When turning them Feel for roughness. All these should be smooth turning. No bumps or grinding. One of them is going to be tight or rough. The PS pump will move in and out a bit, this is normal.

My lexus sc 300 makes a squealing sound when I start it, and when I turn the wheels sharply to the right and left (while it is parked and running. My power steering pump supposedly has to be replaced,...

Hi Genebaran, I doubt very much if the steering pump needs replacement, but the drive serpentine belt does. The squealing happens because the belt is slipping on the pump pulley when the pump is under load when the steering is turned to full lock. By the way, don't keep the steering wheel at full lock for longer than a few seconds at a time, as it will place the pump under too much load! Tell your mechanic to fit a new belt. Advise the mechanic to make a sketch of the routing of the belt before he removes the old one. Regards Johngee10

The belt in my 01 Dodge Dakota squeals badly. Started when I had my power steering pump replaced. I tried changing the belt and the tensioner, but still squeals. Is it possible the pulley on the power...

excess mechanical drag from the pump can cause the belt to slip and squeal, but before focusing on the pump I'd check the condition, tension and alignment of the belt. I might even try cleaning all the pulleys with an aerosol brake cleaner and install a new belt, particularly if the current one has more than 50,000 miles on it. It might be that the squeal is coming from or caused by a different belt-driven accessory.
A more typical noise from a power-steering pump is a high-pitched whine, not a squeal. Usually, if the steering wheel is stationary, meaning that the steering rack is not "asking" for assistance from the high-pressure fluid from the pump, there's little or no noise

1992 Mazda MX3 is sweeking when I turn car on...might be some sort of belt but I'm not positive.

Sounds like the belt, you're right on track. Check the belt(s) and replace if neccesary. If belts are fine, check for tightness. Should be about a 1/4" flexibility when you push down on them. If all is ok, belt dressing should take care of the problem.
Now, if for some reason, one of the components that run off the belts may be going bad, specifically a/c compressor. If it's starting to lock up, it will make your belt squeal and finally snap.

Squealing on start up and a/c activation

The symptoms you describe are due to a slipping drive belt.

Slipping can be due to normal wear and tear and cured by retensioning the belt, or sometimes because something has contaminated the belt such as leaking power steering fluid or engine coolant.

It's quite common for incorrectly tensioned belts to squeal at start up as the belt takes up a shape when the engine's not running, and as it isn't tensioned correctly, takes a few seconds to start flexing properly again. As switching the A/C on also causes the squealing, it sounds like it's the belt that drives the A/C compressor that's slipping - it's not uncommon for there to be up to 3 belts, one for the alternator, one for the power steering pump, and one for the A/C, although it's more common for the alternator and power steering pump to be driven by the same belt.

I'm not familiar with your make and model so cant give any specifics as to how to re-tension your belts, but a tech manual will give you all the details.

1997 dodge avenger 2.0, belt squealing

Hi

The Power Steering Belt tension requires adjustment, to give it more tension, to cure the slipping, resulting in the squealing, or perhaps renewal, due to cracking or excessive wear.

Your Power steering Belt, belt is your primary problem.

Good Luck !

A FixYa Would Be Nice, Thank´s......John.
