My car is overheating when in traffic and losing coolant. The water is going into the driver side floorboard. It is the coolant water, you can smell it. The heater core has been by-passed to see if that was the problem. Any idea what the problem could possibly be? There is no leakage on the outside of the car except the a/c water.

Check all hoses and also see if your water pump is leaking.
There has to be something that is leaking possibly in the area of your floor boards. I suspect a hose that has a pin hole in it and only leaks under pressure.

SOURCE: Heater not dispersing hot air

There ia an actuator that controls the flap to change from hot to cold. You have to pull the bottom part of the dash and the whole blower motor housing. The part you are looking for is located just behind the radio and has an arm that goes into the heater core line. That is the piece you need. Its around $165 dollars and a dealer only part. And hope you have someone that can do it because mitsubishi charges over $500 in labor.

SOURCE: car is overheating and windshield is fogging up

If your smelling coolant in cab, and window fogging up, check fog if green heater core is going. Over heating could be a couple of things, plugged radiator, water pump, thermostat. To check for water pump Find the top hose, run car check for leaks on ground. While warm or hot wear glove oven mitt or something that you can feel through but will protect from heat, If you feel flow of coolant more the just a trickle its a good thing to replace thermostat. Also check for bubbles in the coolant tank, if there are bubbles your S.O.L. the head gasket is blown

Your heater matrix has fractured.Suolution fit new matrix.Or you can have it bypassed. But you want get any warm air from the heater if its bypassed. But it will stop the water entering inside your car.

SOURCE: water on passenger floorboard when AC is on

You have a bad "heater core". It will leak inside, and outside once the enclosure fills. You need to replace it, or bypass it before your engine overheats and causes a lot more damage. If you're driving the vehicle daily, make sure you check and fill your coolant before you drive it.

I am getting water on the passenger side floorboard

Water or coolant? Coolant (if you have the correct 50/50 ratio of water and antifreeze) will have a distinctive smell.
If it's coolant that's getting on the passenger side floorboard, you probably have a leak in your heater core.
If it's water, it may be condensation from your a/c evaporator - there's a drain that should allow the condensate out of the HVAC box, but if it's plugged, the water will come inside. The other possibility if it's water is that there is a leak around a window seal, windshield, sunroof, possibly the door window.

My bakkie is overheating and losing water. Took it in for a service today. Mechanic claims they can't find water leak. What else could it be?

one item often overlooked in an overheating case is the radiator cap. it won't hold enough pressure to allow proper circulation of the coolant. it is the cheapest part of the cooling system. replace it and then look to the fans or fan clutch and the carpet area in the passenger footwell for leaking coolant in the floorboard from the heater core. test the cooling system with a pressure tester. is there trash or bugs blocking the fins of the radiator?? Is the coolant level proper and the right ratio 50/50 mix

What is causing water to leak down onto the passenger side floorboard of my 2004 Mazda 6 wagon when I have AC on?

Feel the water and smell it. If it smells sweet and fells oily, is is coolant. If is isn't oily and has no real smell, it is water. There is a tray under the evaporator and heater cores that catches water/coolant and drains it via a tube thru the firewall to the outside of the car. This tube is probably clogged and needs purged. If you have coolant on the floor, you'll need to replace the heater core. If it is water, purging the hose will solve the problem as the water is just condensation from the AC coils

I have a wet floorboard on the drivers side

Is the water hot water or smell like antifreeze? If so you have a leaking heater core. If t's just plain water then look at a leaky gasket on the housing for the heater /AC case.

Overheating

Was the coolant old and weak? At ten degrees, a weak coolant could result in freezing and that can cause an engine freeze plug to burst open. Check the side of the engine block for signs of leakage around the freeze plugs. Another possibility is the heater hoses. They run along the passenger side of the engine as well. The last possibility is the heater core. If it leaks you may smell coolant inside the passenger compartment. You MAY get a wet floorboard on the passenger side. Coolant leaking from the core usually will fall into the condensation pan for the A/C and run out of the passenger compartment thru the firewall on the passengers side.

The car is leaking fluid on the drivers side. Also

if the fluid has a strong smell then its likely brake fluid .. that would be a bad master cycilnder ... if the fluid smells like antifreeze then thats a leaking heater core ... if its just water then look foor a clogged drain hose on the ventalation air intake chamber ... the brake fluid will be oily and a strong smell .. if thats the problem then it is not safe to drive until that is fixed .. you could partially or completely lose braking ... .

It faintly smelled like coolant inside the car

Usually when the windows are closed and the smell of coolant gets inside the car means the heater core has a leak. The leak can be the very tiniest and the smell will be very noticable to anyone. If the windshieild fogs up the leak is getting larger.

Check the radiator cap ton see if its holding the correct pressure. That will cause the temperature to fluxuate as well.
