The convertable roof on my 2003 Z4 won't go up automatically. I am pretty good mechanically and electrically. I should be able to repair it. I would like to find a wiring diagram. Also where the up motor is located and or limit switches???

This is how the motor looks in your BMW z4 car.

The convertable roof on my 2003 Z4 won't go up - 1deba00.jpg

Two relatively common issues with the Z4 tops is that the hydraulic fluid for the main top motor (the one that does the work after the header is unlatched) gets low. The other is that the main motor gets water trapped inside the plastic housing whcih causes the motor to fail. There's an updated housing that is supposedly more waterproof than the current housing, but if the failure is due to water ingress, then you'll also have to replace the top motor. If it's just low on fluid, you just fill it and it'll be good. There's a clear plastic reservoir for the fluid that'll show you if it's low. It's visible behind the left trunk carpet liner (which is also the area where the motor is located).
The reservoir is attached to the motor. It is down insid ethe body cavity where the top pivots on the body on the drivers side. To get to it you pretty much have to remove the complete top.

I think that you may have solved my little problem, although taking off that soft top looks like a bit of a chore. Here is what I understand.

    1. the roof must come off to get any access to the motor at all. even if all you have to do is add hydraulic fluid the soft top must come off. Is this correct?

    2. Great job on laying out how to dismantle the hydraulic motor. Do you have any photos or any other tips for the removal of the soft top. It seemed a wee vague in your explanation regarding the removal of the pump.

    Thanks Bill Walker

If you can give me your e-mail address I can send it to you since FixYa limits post to 150k

however, you you mean the top won't go up automatically do you mean by touching the up button once

typically this is a result of a barking brake switch issue

Mine getsstuck in retraced mode. You can har the motor trying to move the top but nothing happpens, then it pops loose on it's own. I think this is the retrack latching mechanism holding the top down. May needs some lubricant or adjustment.

Will a a failed soft top convertible top motor show up as a OBD fault code

It will not show up with a typical P code from Autozone. It might show up with a dedicated code reader for specifically BMW. My code reader with BMW extended program does not show it. To trouble shoot this without a BMW code reader, try your buttons first, if you do not hear a motor noise, then you need to check if motor is getting power when button is pressed. Take of access panel in center of roof forward near rear view mirror. You will be able to access the motor there. Probe the electrical connections going to the motor and have someone push the buttons. Review the meter while buttons are pressed to see if motor is getting approx. 12 volts. If so then the motor may be dead. If there is not activity at the motor as far as 12 volts, then you have an electrical supply issue which could be several options: Electrical wiring, loose plug somewhere, a bad fuse (most common), a bad switch (probably not if both switches do not respond to electrical test), or a bad relay. Remember to check the truck are for the roof storage panel. If this is in the up position it will not allow enough roof for roof the store in truck and will not allow roof to move, retract.

BMW Z4 convertible top opened and now wont close. Motor runs then stops. Latch is stuck and the emergency pull cord will not release. How do I get to the latch to free the top?

try a spray lubricant into the motor mechanism and grease any visable wire cables that run from/to motor ,not the electrical cables the bare wire winder cables, also grease/ lubricate any accessable pivot/hinge points , gently pull the cord and gently push the roof back and forth occasionally trying motor with a bit of patience this should get the roof moving , also look for anything that may be snagging the roof/mechanism as there is a pressure protection system to stop the roof being fully closed on say someones hand so preventing injury

Is there anyway a 2013 mini convertibles roof can open without the key being in? Thanks

Only by using the emergency manual override process which you'll find in the vehicle owners' handbook. But it is intended for occasional emergency use only such as when the roof electrics fail. Regular usage can cause additional problems. If the electrics fail then it's recommended to use manual override to close the roof and to keep it that way until you can get the roof mechanism fixed. Manual opening a z4 convertible top

The direct answer is there is a z shaped tool that comes in the tool kit in your trunk. This is a hex ended key that will fit in the motor. Access the motor is also in your user Guide. In the center of roof near the rear view mirror is an access panel to motor area. pry lose the panel and access motor. Place wrench in motor and wind away. There should be a direct arrow noting the direction of rotation. Note this will take sever thousand rotations of the wrench, it is a slow process but works.

Hi, When i press the button to open the electric (convertable) roof it only starts to open on the left side, the right side is not even responding... Do you have any idea why or how this is...

More than likely the cable on the inside of the right mechanism snapped. To repair it, the entire mechanism needs replaced to the tune of upwards of $3000 USD. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. And even worse is there is no real way to check it without pulling the mechanism apart. I hope you find this information useful. You may wish to stalk the junkyards for one out of a junker. You can probably hook one of those up for about $300.00. You may also wish to look for the lift mechanism. Here is a place that has both, pretty reasonably priced. They could also help you to pinpoint the problem better based on you actual experience.

Hi, My convertible top of my 2005 Z4 is not working, start to open and stop. What wrong may be and what need to do ? How to open manually if motor not working ? If need repair what cost usually for tis...

I'm sorry to say that it sounds like your motor on the hood has packed up, this is usually due to water ingress and is not easy to repair. There are some drain holes in the area of the motor and these tend to clog with dirt etc this results in the motor getting wet and results in the problem you have explained I have had the same problem with my Z4 and this was fixed by BMW as apparently they have to re-align the roof although there are several forums with people who have done it themselves and report it take about 5 hours

There is a manual release in the boot that will allow you to move the roof up and down. If you open the boot and look along the top edge you will see a red tab. Pull this out 5mm and twist so it doesn
