The AC compressor does not have to be running to charge the AC system, and the low pressure switch will even prevent the AC compressor from operating until there is sufficient pressure to operate the AC compressor without damaging it.

Start the engine and turn on the AC, then charge the system with the R-134a and as soon as there is enough pressure built up to trip the low pressure switch off, the AC compressor clutch should then engage and then finish charging the AC system.

When recharging the ac you need to recover the old refridgerent. That means you have to take out all the old 134 and replace with new 134. On the engine sticker under the hood should tell you how many pounds of 134 it takes. When put in the 134 make sure your ac is on high.

in 1986 it is r12 but you can convert to r134 which is a ton cheaper than paying for r12 you need a license to buy r12 r134 is right on the shelf at auto zone they also sell retro fit kits with everything you need to convert your system and they work very well

SOURCE: I put a can of 134a it seemed to help but still

1) get a gauge to check on the low side pressure when adding refrigerant to see if it's too low or too high.
2) if in the proper range check again in a few days to see if the pressure is holding and you don't have a leak that requires a teardown & repair.
3) the fact that the compressor (clutch) IS engaging and disengaging suggests that that part of your system is working ok. IF you can get normal refrigerant levels then you can start troubleshooting the fast cycling.

I believe the freon type is correct. Check the pressure of the freon if it decreased. The AC setting should be at high the same with the fan when measuring and recharging. Check if you get the clicking sound in the engine bay when you have the AC turned on. If not it could be the relay in the relay box that may have gone bad. The problem may also be not related to the freon level or the compressor but the evaporator. With the year of the car you may want to inspect the evaporator which is found underneath the dashboard at the driver side. You may just need to have it cleaned.

Why will my 1993 ford aerostar air conditioner will not turn on after i put in the freon?

You have to add 134a refrigerant while the engine is running and the A/C is on max with temp setting at lowest level. Without the proper charge in PSI, the compressor will not kick on. If the pressure is correct under those circumstances, You either have air in the system ( take it and have it pumped down then refilled) or the compressor is bad.

1994 olds 88 royale A/c wont start or charge 134a

AC clutch has to be energized for the compressor to turn and cool. Check out the thermostat as well as the low pressure cut off switch, relays for proper operation.

If you connect the 12 volts to the hot side of the clutch it should engage - if so that indicates that the issue is caused by some electrical item in line with the circuit that powers the clutch.

2003 dodge grand caravan ac recharge

you should be adding the 134a to the system the low pressure switch is doing its job by not allowing the compressor to kick on, it wont kick on until there is enough 134a in the system to be above the preset pressure for the low pressure switch.

01 mustang convertable i changed the ac compressor now what?

need to evacuate the system check the orifice tube put back together and re-vacuum system to remove the air from the system.
it's cycling to fast which means air in the system.

any air left in the system will counter any refrigerant in the system.

98 mustang squealing and ac

first thing to do before you charge it again replace the 'O' rings in back of the compressor also add some a/c oil because that will help the a/c compressor not to rattle this is the way I do mine I put in a can of 134A first and after that I put in the 134A oil and then I put in the rest of the 134A that is needed
I would disassemble the front brakes and check out the wheel bearings and sometime there is nothing wrong with them just need to add bearing grease but if they are scarred or damaged replace them
