My muffler system there is 2 or 3 emission part in the pipes from the exhaust to the muffler. can a straight pipe rplact those 3 piecies?

The only component that must stay in place to pass federal emissions is the catalytic convertor. If you are not concerned with emissions then a straight pipe will be fine. There will not be any adverse performance problems with a straight pipe. Please rate my help this helps me out , Thankyou RJ

My muffler is loud

Do people hear your vehicle coming down the street before they can actually see it? This can be an embarrassing situation. A muffler that is suddenly noisy is often caused by the driver hitting something while on the road, damaging the exhaust system. Rust can also be a culprit of holes in the muffler, resulting in a noisy muffler which gets progressively worse as the holes get bigger.
Exhaust systems in newer vehicles may now last well over 100,000 miles without causing any concerns. But because the exhaust system is exposed to the conditions of the road, damage may occur without warning. The parts of the exhaust system that can be damaged include:
  • Manifold
  • Pre-catalytic converter
  • Front pipe
  • Catalytic converter
  • Intermediate exhaust pipe
  • Front muffler
  • Rear exhaust pipe
  • Rear Muffler
If you do hear a loud noise and you suspect it is the exhaust system, be sure to keep fresh air coming into the vehicle and don't sit in the car while it's idling. If there is a leak, carbon monoxide, a toxic gas, can get into the interior of the car. There is no distinguishing odor so it is easy to be overcome by it.

Title: Increase Fuel MPG by Replacing Back Muffler

Overview:
When your back muffler fails, and or if you want a bit more gas milage, replacing the back muffler with a straight pipe seems to work fine and increase MPG. This is much cheaper than purchasing a back muffler with DIY or to have a local customer shop install a straight pipe.

Symptoms:
Back muffler failing, onion peeling and / or holes in the back muffler.

Experience Level:
Medium

Tools Needed:
Hack Saw, Ratchets, Wrenches, etc.

Time Needed:
About 1 hour:

Parts Needed:
Pipe parts from local auto store. Exhaust sealers, hangers, pipe tip (stainless)

Procedure:
Remove the back muffler by cutting the pipe before the muffler about 2 inches in front of the muffler. Replace with straight pipe components or have a shop do it. You will need some time to get it 100% right. It took me a couple of tries.

Outcome:
- Money savings in replacement.
- Slightly louder, but not much. Actually a better sound (subjective)
- 1-5 MPG gas savings, especially on open road.

Discussion:
I have done this on a 99 9-5 I4 for about 1 year now and it seems to be working fine. I am getting about 3+ MPG on the open road since this was done. It is an automatic with 140k miles solid 29-30 MPG with regular fuel on the open road. I really do not see the need for the back muffler / resonator at the present time.

I will be doing this on a 2001 V6 wagon soon. The muffler will be failing soon.

Last time. I have Ford focus 2003 sedan dohc 2L. I lost a part from exhaust system. from back to front I see 1. tail pipe 2. rectangular box shaped part? Lunch Box? 3. missing part Muffler?

Starting from the front, coming off the exhaust manifold should have, 1. Exhaust pipe, 2. Catalytic converter, 3. Exhaust pipe, 4. Resonator, 5. Tail pipe. Also, there should be an Oxygen sensor somewhere around the catalytic converter.

Exhaust question 93 silverado 5.7l 350. Singlr pipe Think its 3 inch pipe. There is no cat. On it and the muffler is cracked down the middle. Should i put a new muffler/glasspack in for performance reasons...

If you have no catalytic converter and replace the muffler with a straight pipe,, you WILL NOT BE ABLE TO HEAR YOURSELF THINK!!.. I took the converter off mine and it was SOOO loud.(have a Flowmaster dual outlet).. It WAS TOO LOUD.. I put a 28" "glasspack" inline..WHEW.. I can actually hear the radio now!!!

Why is my car riding hard. I just had the complete exhaust system replaced on my 99 intrigue and instead of the dual exhaust muffler the mechanic put a single exhaust muffler on it and now the car is...

its important to have the right amount of backprettiar in your exhaust, so if going from 2 mufflers and 2 pipes to a single one would need to enlarge the size of the pipe to compansate. or it wont breath right and end up gutless.

Muffler pipe rusted and broke clean in half, but actual muffler is new.

NEED TO TAKE VECHICLE TO MUFFLER SHOP LET THEM FIX RUST PIPE WITH A NEW PIPE.LET MUFFLER SHOP FIX BECAUSE THEY CAN WELD JOINT SEAL BOTH NEW EXHAUST PIPE AND NEW MUFFLER SO YOU WONT GET CARBON MONOXIDE POISON LET MUFFLER SHOP CHECK ALL THE EXHAUST SYSTEM BECAUSE THE WHOLE SYSTEM COULD BE RUSTED DROP DOWN WHILE DRIVING YOU PROBABLY NEED NEW EXHAUST PIPE HANGERS.

The exhaust systems are of a two-piece construction for production and five-piece construction for service.
Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter fitted to the Focus range resembles a small muffler. Because of the high temperatures at which the catalytic converter operates, the vehicle body areas around the catalytic converter are protected by heat shields. The catalytic converter controls three emissions; Hydro carbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
Catalyst deactivation due to poisoning
Sulphur (S) in the fuel can cause deactivation of the catalyst.
Lead (Pb) in fuel can cause a severe deactivation at levels above 5 mg per liter of fuel. It is therefore essential that vehicles with catalytic converters always operate on unleaded fuel.
Zinc (Zn) and phosphorus (P) present in some oils, can cause deactivation if oil consumption is high.
The effect of sulphur is felt most if it is released from the catalytic converter as hydrogen sulphide (H2S). This has an unpleasant odor similar to rotten eggs. Changing the fuel manufacturer may help in reducing this phenomena.
To minimize H2S emissions, it is essential that the idle CO level is within specification and that the engine emission system is functioning correctly. For additional information, refer to Section 303-08A or Section 303-08B.
ani_caut.gif CAUTION: If temperatures exceeding 900°C are achieved the catalyst substrates will start to deteriorate. It is important that the cause is defined and rectified if subsequent melts are to be prevented.
Catalyst melts are normally accompanied by loss of power due to excessive back pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 303-07A or Section 303-07B.
High substrate temperatures are caused by the ignition or the fuel systems. For additional information, refer to Section 303-07A or Section 303-07B.
Misfires at high engine speed may result in an almost instantaneous melt.

Exhaust Pipe broke/Rust on muffler

Flex pipe will work, or if it's a straight section of pipe you can buy a universal piece of exhaust tubing with flared ends, trim off the rusty ends on your original pipe with a hacksaw or Sawzall and slip in the new section. Clamp it with 2 muffler clamps and you're set. Total cost should be under $40.
