Your Catera has a sealed for life transmission so therefore on one of these models there is no dipstick and you cannot check the fluid level yourself. The dealer can check the level but that is only necessary if you have a leak. Use a premium grade oil and a quality filter such as AC/Delco, Wix, Purolator, or Bosch. The correct weight oil is listed in your owner's manual and possibly on the oil fill cap or dipstick.

Tranny is slipping

Make sure you have the right level of fluid in the transmission. If it has been a long time since you last changed it, it may need changed with the filter also. Your transmission may be starting to go bad. Check for leaking transmission fluid under the car

Valve train ticking noise 1997 cadillac catera

The cats use hydraulic lifters. Just before your next oil change, or when you are down about a litre of oil, put a litre of transmission fluid (Dextron II) into the engine and drive it about 2to 300 miles and then change the oil and filter. You should hear the valve train noise dissappear within the 1st 20 or 30 miles.

Do not overfill!!!!!

This is assuming you have a plugged hydraulic lifter(s). If you have a worn cam or worn valve train, you need to remove the heads (both) and send them to a machine shop that does heads and re-install...new head gaskets, valve cover gaskets as well as any worn cams. valves etc....

Car really has to be worth it. At this point, if you love Cateras (I have 2 2001's), I would sell it the way it is and get a 00' or an 01'.

The 97' and 98's are not worth the trouble.......

Oil in water

if it is oil .you should notice the oil level drop ,even a small amount ,this would indicate a blown head gasket. but if it is transmission fluid it will be the oil cooler in the bottom of the radiator that cools the transmission fluid .has sprung a leak which is easily fixed at a radiator service centre, the headgasket is a bit bigger job but no real drama .radiator people will be able to tell you if it is oil or tranny fluid

Where is the transmission stick for the 98 catera?

There isnt one. It only has a filler hole on the tranny itself. It is a sealed unit. Your Cadillac, like many newer vehicles, does not have one.
Instead, there is a fluid levelinspection port, that in your case, is in the oil pan of the transmission. To correctly check the fluid level requires the engine to be running with the transmission at operating temperature, about a 15 mile drive. In addition, the vehicle has to be level.
You can jack the vehicle up evenly on both ends, but a lift is the preferred way. The fluid should be even with the bottom of the threaded opening the transmission pan when the plug is removed.
A quart of tranny fluid with a screw on nozzle will help you add fluid as needed until it slightly flows back out of the threaded plug hole.
Recheck the plug for any leaking of tranny fluid once you have completed adding fluid and reinstalled the inspection plug.

1997 Mazda protege LX 1.5 automatic transmission

You are going to need a transmission shop. Mazdas do not always throw codes. You have an early OBD transmission, which do not send out many codes.

No dipstick to put transmission fluid into

HI, this transmission is a sealed type. you will need to purchase a special tool from the dealership to fill this unit properly.

Contact the nearest Audi dealer for this fill tool.

I have a 1997 Cadillac Catera that is having shifting problems. It slips between first and second gear when I accelerate hard. The light on the dash has come on. It also chatters when in first and second...

It may help to change the transmission fluid and the filter. I'd definitely baby the tranny until you can figure out the problem.

Smell the transmission fluid for burnt smell and discoloration, it is a sign of trouble.

You may want to start shopping around for transmission shops.

Good luck!

Tim

Transmission

Had the same problem a few years ago. It has to be taken in to a shop for trans fluid to be put in.
