Did you check if theres is a rubber between the brake light switch and the pedal. This rubber push the switch all the way down to close the circuit.

The rubber push end on the pedal lever has fallen apart. Can we get a replacement?

Thank you just went and checked and there are pieces of black rubber on my mat.

SOURCE: 94 altima brake lights won't go off draining the

I encountered the same problem. I noticed on the driver side floor that there were a couple of small broken pieces of black plastic. The pieces of plastic crumbled off and are spacers that sit o the brake pedal lever. The make contact with the brake light switch as well as one that makes contact with a switch that activates the release on the automatic transmission. I fabricated to small rubber grommets to the same thickness and glued them to the same location and the problem was solved. I accessed this by removing the lower fascia/plastic body component to gain better access to the area. In all the fix took about ten minutes. Good luck.

I have the same problem with my 03 Focus hatchback! Someone stoppedme yesterday to tell me that they looked like they were always on when i was driving but when i was in "Park" they worked... This particular driver was also driving a focus hatchback and asked me if my Cruise Control was working.. It actually was not and he told me the same thing happened with his focus. He said it was a wire attached to the back brake lights that had broken. I have not yet gotten it fixed. has anyone else had this problem?

Check that the switch is closing fully when pedal is up. There is a small spring connecting the switch to the pedal. If this is ok replace the switch.

Rear lights stay on after I turn the van off?

this is for the brake lights --the brake light switch is out of adjustment, or needs replaced. most are located on top of brake pedal arm underdash. first spray the switch with wd-40 or similar. it just may be sticking. ===as for the rear lights staying on, see if anything else is on when key is off. if so it could be a bad ignition switch. if bad it will not cut power off. a ignition switch accounts for about 50% of the power problems on todays vehicles. have a good day!!

In some cases the brake light will come on when the rear brake pads are getting worn down to low, check them if they appear to be lacking of enough brake material replace the rear shoes to make the light go out and restore adequate rear brake traction.

Hi, It is probably the switch, located at the pedal, a new one is inexpensive and easy to replace. The shorted switch will run the battery down. Good Luck to you, this should Fixya!
