That leaves the radiator or the head gasket, do a compression test, look at the plugs for a whitish deposit, sure sign of coolant, good luck

Coolant light come on which indicates an overheating condition

You can never run water in the system, water will boil. You must have a 50/50 coolant/water.

Have the system flushed, the radiator can become restricted from old coolant, the fins have very small ports for flow and can become blocked leading to less cooling.

No thermostat means full flow, so this should not be running hot.

Usually the only way a water pump goes bad is when they leak, they are a direct drive, and the propeller never wears out unless at some point someone had to high of a coolant mixture.

Get the system flushed to clean it and have it made into a 50/50, can't have mostly water, coolant dissipates the heat.

If flushing does not help, the cheapest first thing is a new radiator, or get a new core for it, that's cheaper.

My 98 deville had a cracked radiator. replaced it. all was fine till a couple weeks ago when it overheated due to coolant leak from purge tank. replaced it. no more leaks but still ran up to 140 w/ air on...

First, you must have a properly installed thermostat that is working correctly. Second, Northstar engines are notorious for air in the cooling system after draining and refilling - keep checking the purge tank level after overheating and after the cooling system cools down. Third, make sure your cooling fans are working correctly (relay, fuse, temperature sensor) - check to make sure both are running when it overheats. If all the above is correct, the problem will probably be blockage in the system (try a flush) or your water pump itself is failing.

I have a 1999 oldsmobile intrigue with a 3.5 engine and it is overheating what might be the problem?

CHECK COOLANT LEVEL MOST NEWER VECHICLE DONT HAVE RADIATOR CAP YOU HAVE TO POUR COOLANT IN THE COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG THE COOLANT WILL GO TO RADIATOR. IF THE COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG EMPTY ADD COOLANT UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL STOP DROPPING AT STAY AT FULL COLD MARK.IF COOLANT OKAY,NEED TO REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG PRESSURE CAP. IF ALL BEEN DONE. MOST OF THE TIME WHEN CAR OVERHEATING WHILE MOVING. RADIATOR CORES STOPPED UP OR RADIATOR GRILLE DIRTY OR RESRICTED.ENGINE BLOCK COOLANT PASSAGES CLOGGED AND HEATER CORE CLOGGED.CHECK WATER PUMP SEE IF WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAKING IF SO REPLACE WATER PUMP.IF ENGINE OVERHEATING AT A LONG TRAFFIC LINE ENGINE COOLING FANS NOT RUNNING EITHER COOLING FANS FUSE AND RELAYS BAD.OR ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE BAD. THE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR TURNS ON COOLING FANS AT A CERTAIN TEMPERATURE IF SENSOR BAD FANS WONT TURN ON. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50 /50 MIXTURE OF COOLANT AND WATER IN COOLING SYSTEM.

2001 Oldsmobile Alero overheating

I think you started out looking in the right places. Replacing the coolant, thermostat, relay and sensor are all fairly inexpensive.

I believe you either have blockage in the system (especially if you're using tapwater), or your water pump may be failing.

I would first either take it to a radiator shop and have them flush the cooling system out thoroughly, or else pick up a chemical flush kit and do it yourself. This involves more than just drain and refill.

If this doesn't work, your next step will probably be replacing the water pump. At almost 200k miles, it's probably about due anyway.
