You need to have the dealer reset the programming. NEVER change a battery in this model car without a backup power source connected to avoid these types of problems in VW's
Look in owners manual,it will show you how to raise/lower roof with tool end of dash driver side
Once you have the tool the best way to reset roof is to manualy lower it and lock rear cover
Two people helps to lower as you have to lift front of roof and lift rear
When rear metal cover is unlocked push roof fully down and lock cover
The roof should then work with the switch
roof has manual crank.open small cover on roof linning just in front of centre of sun roof and crank closed with 3 allen key usually kept inside fuse box cover.
No doubt your soft top issue has long been resolved but just in case someone has a similar issue:
I started to open my A4 Soft top externally using the door key method and like an idiot I must have disengaged the key before the soft top was fully down. I was unable to activate the opening or closing of the soft top automatically using either the key or soft top switch inside. I then manually closed the soft top using the users handbook and manual tool supplied. Soft top would still Not open automatically and the soft top alarm would activate. I solved the issue by manually opening the soft top fully and then manually closing the soft top fully. This seemed to have reset whatever had gone askew.
Yes if you go into the trunk you will find a small passage to get to the pump there will be a little T- shaped knob on top turn this untill it stops and you will be able to lift the top to close it.
Hi ,Unless you are familiar with this system LEAVE it alone, you should be able to manually close the roof to get you home the key is located behind the fuse box cover on the Offside of the car at the end of the dash by the fuse box.your manual will tell you the procedure to close and secure the roof.if your in England(UK) you can email me your Tel. no and I will try and help.
You can try cleaning and lubricating the runners. The sunroof will open as soon as it is obstructed, eg. A childs arm in the way of closing. The problem here is that you can hear the motor running, wich indicates a broken cable, or a stripped plastic gear.
It happened to mine as well. When I took it to the dealership, they explained that if the top is interrupted while opening or closing (sometimes unintentionally our finger may slip off and stop the process for a brief time) the top can get out of synch and needs to be reset. They did some type of fuse reset and then it worked fine.
