Weird as it sounds, the AC is on while the defroster is operating. You mention recharging the freon, but did you also evacuate and reinstall the working fluid? A certain amount of lubricant is supposed to be in the lines. Without it, yes, your compressor is at risk.
It may be too late, but you can try getting it professionally evac/filled and see if that helps. Also if you remove the belt and energize the clutch, you can spin the compressor by hand and listen for dragging sounds. Good luck!
You do not want to recharge a/c on high side, look at both a/c hoses coming from a/c compr, there will be a thick one and a thin one, the thin one is high side, and the thick one is low side, recharge a/c at thick hose port.
If you have no Refrigerant in the system, you don't put any in. It will just leak out and pollute the atmosphere.
Go to a repair shop that does A/C work and follows correct EPA standards for working on air conditioning.
You can't do that job at home without proper training and equipment.
You do not have a cabin filter....Two things......you need to check (freon preasure) you may have a freon leak from the AC evap coil behind the instrrment panel, the smell is AC freon pag oil from the AC system, it smells funny. Or you may have mildew build up on your evap coil there is a spray to disinfect the coil.Check auto zone or pep boys....Good luck my friend
I did this on my 2000....
Go to the nearest discount parts place.. Tell them what your car is and ask for AC coolant.. They will tell which type of gas your car takes.. You can buy a kit that puts coolant into your ac...
