I,ve got a 2000 freelander just put the tow bar on off my old one, led the wires upto where they are supposed to go, (where they went on old one) but not sure which wires connect to the wires connecting to the light where I took them off my old one. The towbar just has one socket for the lights to work on trailor cheers Matthew.
The first thing to do is not to guess at what wires do what. Go to the hardware store and pick up a tester that has only one test prong. They usually have a battery in them. put the tester in the connector terminals and test one at a time. These little tester require you to be somewhat grounded like leaning your arm against some metal on the car. if you can't find somewhere to ground your self, then run a small wire from the negative battery post/wire and wrap the bare wire around your finger. Turn on which ever item you want to test first. When you find the wire that is hot9lights up the tester) then plug in to one of the tow bar wires. you should avoid plugging in a ground wire. You can usually trace which one is the ground wire. Another way to trace which is the ground wire is to use a continuity tester. Put on tester lead on the frame of the tow bar and the other lead on a tow bar connector wire and you should get a light on the tester when you find the one that is the ground wire and then mark that connector wire so you don't connect any of your hot wires to it. Hope this helps

fitting tow bars now require a compliance plate to keep the vehicle road legal. I would suggest that you use the services of a tow bar fitting shop and they will supply all the wire connections and the compliance plate when done.
Hi There it may be easier to trace the required wire from each light cluster and splice in the towbar electrics rather than follow a hand book wiring diagram ie; pin 1 Yellow L/H direction indicator. go to left hand cluster and locate left hand indicator wire, stip back the tape binding enough so that you have enough to play with and then splice in the Yellow towbar wire and continue onto the next wire on the list. Good luck
you have to buy a towbar for your model car . as the mounting hole will be there, if you try and fit any towbar and drill holes it will affect the structure of the car the wiring for the tow bar is universal and if you get a wiring kit it will tell you how to wire it in,
The connectors for towing wire harnesses on foresters are generally on the passenger side, below the rear taillight inside the cargo space. some require pulling up the foam block that is between the spare tire compartment and the taillight. Check where you replace the tailights from inside the car, if there isn't a matching connector hanging out there, check around the spare tire compartment, see if you can remove the carpeted foam block next to the compartment and find the plug under there.
