I m having problems with the convertible top . you could hear the motor runing on it but the top does not go up or down please help

It is likely the transmission:

1. dangerously low on fluid, or
2. blown.

There could be several causes - rusty or dirty flex joints ( the point where the metal arms contact each other ) or either bad contacts in the motor or a bad motor. Using a multimeter to test resistance would be my first step after lubricating all of the flex joints. You didn't mention if you can hear the electric motor working while trying to move the top - if not, then you may have found the culprit. that motor could be worn out - or at least in need of a rebuild !I'm not sure where that motor is located on a beemer, but calling a local friendly shop may guide you in the right direction. It IS 31 years old - and time is not nice to electronics!!

DO U HEAR THE MOTOR RUNNING AT THE LEFT SIDE REAR INSIDE THE BOOT ??? DOES THE YELLOW INDICATOR FLASHES WHEN U TRY TO WORK THE TOP?WHEN U UNLOCK THE TOP DO THE WINDOWS ROLL DOWN A BIT?IF U COULD LET ME KNOW SO THAT I CAN HELP U FURTHER MORE!!

the problem is either on the top down motor or your worm gear.

i had the same problem with my 1998 bmw 323i and right under the back drivers seat there is an emergency convertible top lever with a orange tip on it. i removed my back seat to make it easier. when you pull that lever, you will hear a bang sound. that is the sound of the motors disengaging.(there are 3 top motors in the trunk by the left side panel when you remove it) you will then have full access of movement to either put the top up or down. Something broke. Hope your warrenty still covers it since your going to need a diag and a dealer part. Its your only option

Sounds like the switch is bad. Also check the relays. You might have one for up and one for down.

Your top motor is in the trunk on the drivers side wall behind the panel. Remove the two screws to remove the cover. Check the fluid level in the reservor. Check that no lines have come off of the pump and have someone pushing the top down button while checking. If this is not the problem, then it is a possibility that the e-brake connection is not working right.

I had the same problem with my 95 GT. You may have a leak in your system (motor, lines, cylinders). It seems there just isnt enough fluid to push the top up. I think Ford used the same system for 01 also. I had to replace the hydraulic cylinder that pushes the top up. My fluid leaked out because one of the cylinders was bad. This may be the problem. Located the motor and look for leaks.

I can hear the motor going but nothing will work.
There is enough fluid for the top to work.
