I have 2 questions 1st- about a year ago i had a new fuel pump installed. (delco) In the last week i have noticed a sound like a high pitch squeal. I crawled around under the van while it was running. The noise seemed to be coming from the gas tank area. I hope its not the fuel pump going out. It cost $900 dollars to have it replaced. 2nd- i have an occasional popping sound in my right front on accelerations and sometimes when i hit a bump.

$900.00? They saw you coming. Next time pull the tank yourself. The pump can't be more than $300

First of all $900 for a fuel pump? You got ripped! Sorry ,I just replaced one myself and fuel pump only cost me $214 with life time warenty. if you are the least bit mechanically inclined? Get a piece of plywood about 2ft-x2ft and place on floor jack under gas tank ,siphon as much gas as you can out of gas tank, mark the three lines on the passenger side of the gas tank on top(1,2,3)and dis connect,.jack upplywood to gas tank to hold weight while loosening 2 metal bands(straps) around gas tank, there are 2 bolts on each strap, lower tank to ground and slide off jack, jack up rear of vehicle to slide gas tank from under vehicle, remove the "C" clip to release fuel pump from gas tank. reverse this procedure to reinstall new one. The only problem I had was the new O ring gasket that came with new fuel pump was too stiff not allowing enough clearance to install C clip so I used the old O ring gasket and had no problems. That occasional popping could be a cv axle assuming you have all wheel drive.

There is a high pitched sound coming from under my 2002 Jimmy. It seems to be originating in the vicinity of the fuel tank, catalytic converter, differential area. But I cannot isolate it. Possibles?

Fuel pump in the tank makes a high pitch sound which is normal. Turn your key in the ignition, but don't start, you should hear the high pitch sound with the pump priming the system. You will still hear it when started, it's annoying but normal. Different brands are quieter than other, I just replaced mine with a Delphi brand fuel pump which is a tad quieter than AC Delco stock pump.

I know i have the same problem, and i also noticed than when i open the Hood the whistle just stops, so i figure out it must be some air cycling in or out osmewhere, I found out my air intake connected to throttle body was misplaced a weird gap was left open allowing air to whistle. u might wanna check there

2000 Beetle Loud Whirring at start up

its your secondary air pump. it turns on in the cold morning to inject more air into your exhaust, something about emission. its normal to be high pitched. once on my car it was way loud, i looked and the hose had disconnected. either way its normal if its not super loud. but if its everyone is looking at me loud then check for loose hoses!
