Disconnect the battery, unbolt the alternator, remove the wires and write down or draw yourself a picture so you can put them back where you got them. Some need to be twisted and turned a bit to get them out. Replacing is the reverse of removal. It sometimes helps to partially un-bolt the brackets from the engine so you have a bit of room to get it back in.
My rule: If it's in your way, remove it (that can often save hours of extra work)

My 1987 dodge w 150 wont hold a charge ive changed the alernator battery as well as the voltage regulator. when i charge the battery it holds a charge for about 5 to 6 starts

Could be a short. Have you checked the voltage at the battery with the car running? Is it over 14 volts?

Altenator Not working Well

were talking about the big fat wire right? runs to the starter where the positive battery cable connects. Be sure the connections are clean and shiny bright on that cable and the battery connections and the starter connections. Make sure where the alternator bolts to the engine theres no corrosion and the bolts themselves are clean too, thats the ground for the alternator. Check the ground cable on the battery where it bolts to the body and or the engine too.

I have never done this before, changed out an alternator on a 2001 ford focus

1. Disconnect the battery first.

2. Remove all the connectors on the back of the altenator.
3. Remove the screws holding the wires to the altenator.
4. remove the bolts connecting the altenator to the engien block.

Installation in reverse order.

hope this helps

Altenator replacement

its not hard to replace an alternator,,,there are 2 bolts that hold it in place that you have to take out.make sure you take the pos battery cable loose so you dont short anything out , once you remove the bolts he alternator will move freely there is a wiring harness hooked to the back of it that you have to take loose and then you can pull the alternator off the try.you put it back the same way you took the old one off and when you go to tighten the belt you need a prybar to apply tension against the alternator and then as you keep that tension on therer you tighten the golts to keep the belt tight. thats about all there is to it
