1995 VW Speedometer & tachometer work only when car interior is very very cold! Then after engine is warmed up will work fine until you turn engine off, then both stop working. Any ideas?

the way any motor vehicles interior heater works is by allowing water from the engines cooling system to circulate through a mush smaller radiator located behind the dashboard and the fan blows air through the radiator allowing the warm water to heat the air so when you select warm or cold via the interior controls a valve fitted in line of the water pipes that is linking the engine bay radiator to the interior one allows water to flow which makes me believe that valve is not functioning
I take it that you only have 1 speedometer and that reads miles per hour or car speed . The left speedo? is in reality a tachometer and reads the engine revolutions per minute. When the engine is cold (before it reaches operating temperature) the CPU will keep the rpm's above 1000 (1 x1000) and when that temperature is reached the idle speed is reduced to normal operating rpm's. So yes it is normal. All you need to do is know the difference and the meaning of all the gauges.
Cold solder joints were a common problem with GMC instrument panels of that time. I've found surface mount resistors just rolling around inside panels with some just plan gone. If so you can get a panel from junk yard remove parts from that & fix yours. Removal & repair is not all that hard.
This is a result of either a bad solder job at the factory or just bad solder. You can remove your gage cluster and remove and resolder the joints at the back of the 2 indicators. there are several sites on the internet that have specific instructions.
"The Fix" works...I would have not believed it untill I did it.... Start the car in reverse and about 5 times later it reset the speedometer back to zero.....wow!
