I have a 1997 Chevy Cheyenne with the 305 Vortec engine. For the past year or so I've been battling an intermittent no start issue. So far we've replaced Fuel pump & filter, distributor, camshaft sensor, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and crank position sensor. Nothing has affected it. Usually it either happens when it's cold or damp, but now it happens at any given time no matter the weather. Also while just cruising in it, it will miss hear and there. I had a car that did this previously and it was the fuel pump. The truck has 225k on it and burns absolutely no oil. We are getting quite frustrated with this condition. I've been told that it could be the poppets being stuck, or the EGR stuck open, and that there's a temp sensor that is telling the truck that it's warm and causing the injectors not to spray enough fuel. What sensor is this? I'm at a loss. We haven't put a fuel pressure gauge on it yet, that is the next order of business, but the injectors are spraying what I think is quite a bit of fuel while trying to start the engine.

I cannot see it spraying fuel. The injectors/"spider" are enclosed under the upper intake.

We've added an entire can of Seafoam to 1/4 tank of gas. So far it's started and ran like a champ ever since. After reading about the "poppets" sticking being a failure prone issue, especially with high miles, and there being a TSB out on it. We decided to go with the cleaning before we upgraded the "spider" under the upper intake. So far so good.

THE FUEL PUMP IS BAD.

if your losing fuel pressure after the pump runs the drain back valve in the pump has failed.

and i doubt that you are seeing enough fuel pressure to run a vortec engine.

low fuel pressure equals a non running vortec

The AC orifice tube on a 1997 Chevrolet Cheyenne 4.3 ltr vortec v-6 truck is located in the small inlet tube of the evaporator. The high pressure liquid line must be removed to gain access then the orifice tube can be pulled out with a pair of needle nose pliers.

I have a 1997 Chevy 1500 Cheyenne with 305 vortex with code p1345 manufacturer control. Ignition system or misfire

does the engine run? If it does you may have a loose / intermittent connection at the crankshaft sensor or cam sensor. Check the crankshaft position sensor. Make sure it isn't loose. Also check the camshaft position sensor.

1997 Chevy Cheyenne K 1500, 305 vortec exhaust backfire, runs rich,no power

If #4 is the only cylinder low on compression, chances are your engine has not jumped timing. A broken or burnt exhaust valve sounds like the most likely candidate here. Quick repair will save you many dollars as the backfiring can eventually cause problems with the exhaust manifold and can cause catalytic converter and O2 sensor damage. You will need to pull the head off the engine and have it serviced. Many will tell you that if you do one head you should do both. It is good advice, especially since burnt valves are usually caused by pushrods that are loose due to wear of the valve guides.

Inside or directly under the distribitor cap is a plastic ring with either one or two wires attached..... these devices fail and not allow the engine to start.
It happened on my 88 chevy (305 cu in.). a quick fix is to replace it with a new one.. (Advance Auto) or other parts store.

You can use any 305 motor. Like you said you will have to exchange parts from your old motor to the new one. Just make sure you don't go to far back, because the old 305's don't have the injector ports. Then you would have to replace the heads also.

Untill recently GM didn't change much of anything as far as bolt paterns You could bolt up a 350 from 20 years ago to your transmission and motor mounts. But that is not really what your wanting to do. The question is do you have a "vortec" or is it TBI. The vortec motor says vortec all over it (they were pretty proud of it I guess) The earlier TBI motor, at first glace look just like the old carburetor versions until you take of the air cleaner and find a throttle body instead of a carburetor. The two are not interchangeable as to the electronics, they are way diffract.

Recheck the spark plug gap - these so called pre-gapped plugs are not always correct, also check the primary and secondary resistance on your coil.
