This problem is on a 1998 740iL. When I press the steering wheel cruise control activator - the green indicator light comes on but when I press the "set" (+) button it does not engage and the car does not maintain speed. The green indicator light goes out when I would expect the cruise control to kick on and will not come back on even if I press the activator (i/o) button repeatedly. The fuse (#44 in the engine fuse block) tests good at a bmw repair shop. The green indicator light will stay on for a long time if I don't attempt to set my speed.

The most common reasons a Chevrolet Express cruise control isn't working are failed control module, sensor or switch issues, or throttle actuation problems.
Once you have turned your cruise control on accelerate to desired speed press SET button on right hand side of steering wheel before lifting foot from accelerator, then remove foot from accelerator. pushing RESUME button will deactivate cruise control without turning it off. Then when clear of traffic push resume again to activate cruise control. It will automatically resume to previous set speed.
If the cruise control functions on the steering wheel are working ok, press the switch (where the light is located) a few times to see if it is stuck in the ON position. If this is the case, and wont return to OFF, replace the switch.
The cruise control switches are located on the steering wheel. When the cruise control is turned on there will be a green light luminated on the dash that says "cruise". When at the desired speed press "set" to set the cruise control at that speed.
Get on a road you will be traveling at the same speed for a long period of time, such as a freeway.
Reach
your desired speed. Choose a speed that allows you to move with the
flow of traffic and not go over or under the designated speed limit for
that road.
Locate
the ON and SET buttons on your steering wheel. Press ON first and SET
after. Your cruise control is now activated. Most vehicles must be
traveling at least 30 miles per hour to set the cruise control.
Press and hold the SET button if you wish to use cruise control at a higher speed. Hold until your desired speed is reached.
Decrease speed by pressing the COAST button.
Push
the brake pedal to disengage the cruise control function. If you wish
to return to the previous set speed, use the RES (resume) button. You
must be traveling at least 30 miles per hour for this function to
resume.
Erase any previous speed by pressing the OFF button.
The cruise-controls have 2-buttons that must be activated before it gets the car going when you remove your foot off the gas-pedal.
The cruise button is essentailly a switch that turns 'on' the cruise servo-motor that tells the sytems that you wants to use it, so it gets ready.
There are other three switches on the right-side of the steering wheel namely: resume accel; cancel; set decel.
To get your car to cruise: you must steady your speed and foot on the gas-pedal. You cannot just press the switches and expect the car to cruise. It takes about two-to-three seconds for the system to respond to a set cruising speed.
How to do it: accelerate to a speed of about 30-mph. Press the 'cruise' button on the dash first. Next you press 'set decel' button. This will turn 'on' the cruise control light on the instrument panel. Then wait a second or three and you would feel the cruise engagement. Any touch on the brake pedal will slow down the car and turns the cruise off. The 'cancel' button turns off the cruise light on the instrument panel.
If you hit the brake-pedal at any time for any reason, and you would like to continue cruising again, simply press the 'resume accel' button.
The cruise system works in conjunction with the braking system of the car. So all major parts of the braking system must be in good condition, otherwise the cruise system could shut off itself.
If you hit "On", cruise control is on. It's just not set to the speed.
To properly set the cruise control, do the following procedure:
Select the "On" button on the left side of the steering wheel
On the right side of the steering wheel, there is a "+" along with "Set", press that button after you have accelerated to the speed you desire to maintain.
Use the "+ and -" to speed up or slow down your vehicle.
To temporarly disable the cruise control, simply press the brake pedal.
To resume the previously desired speed, press the top button "Resume"
