I have a 1992 VW Jetta GL with the 1.8 liter motor with a manual transmission.
I replaced the starter, starter solenoid and battery. I’m getting power to the starter and the starter motor is not turning? Starter spins when jumped to battery from small terminal on solenoid, but when I turn the key in start position the starter doesn’t spin or engage? I really need some help!! Any suggestions???????????
i have had this same problem, but has persisted past the replacing of the ignition switch and key cylinder , what should i look into replacing now?i have had this same problem, but has persisted past the replacing of the ignition switch and key cylinder , what should i look into replacing now?

The best way I have found is to use a small flat blade screwdriver to break the bronze bushing apart, but becareful of the bellhousing. The bronze bushing will break apart pretty easy. Of course, VW makes a tool to remove it, which is about impossible to find. I have heard of taking a tap and tapping some threads into the bushing and then screwing a bolt into it and trying to pull it out.
You vehicle works off a standard ignition key which links to a electrical ignition switch. The wire from the switch goes to the starter solenoid. That wire has a fusable link which operates like a fuse. If to many amps surge through this wire it will melt down inside the insulation. The insulation will not melt away causing a headache to most novice mechcanics. Pull on the solenoid wire a few inches away from the solenoid and see if it stretches at least 1/8 of an inch or more. If it does it has an open stopping the continuity to the positive lug to the solenoid preventing it to work. Any auto parts store sells these fusable links. The counterperson will suggest the crimping supplies and tools needed to purchase for this repair
I presume you mean 'grinds when I turn the ignition..(to start)'.
If this is so, it's most likely the starter motor 'drive (overun) clutch is faulty.
Either replace the starter motor complete or replace the drive clutch assy on the original.
The latter should be cheaper (especially if you can source a new 'drive clutch' and fit it yourself).
it could be the ground wire (black) going to the starter. try putting a jumper cable straight from the black negative side of battery to the exposed metal part on the starter while a friend turns key. if it turns over then its the ground wire. if not its probably the starter solenoid or even the starter motor. solenoid would be cheaper than motor and more likely to be problem.
My manual for '93-'98 models calls for a timing belt replacement every 60K, and the engines are the same for earlier models, VW didn't do much different to them during that time.
