This is a general cutaway of an engine, the crank shaft is the horizontal shaft at the bottom that the rods are connected to. It is literally the heart of the engine.
I'm assuming you have the 4 cyl engine since the V6 uses a distributor. You may need a repair manual to troubleshoot the ignition system. You would need to know if the coil pack is getting voltage from the key switch and signals from the computer.
The crank shaft is actually an internal mechanical part of the engine (see last picture) however the crank shaft position sensor uses through what they call a "hall effect" with a componant inside the transmission. The crank shaft turns which in turn turns the componant inside the transmission. Below are a couple of pictures of the location of the crankshaft position sensor as well as what the plug looks like so you know you are removing the correct part. Hope this helps.....
