Thinks its in Drive all the time, will not start... used to be abled to shift back and forth and it would start.. now it doesnt... cut the neutral safety switch wired them together thought I'd out smart it... didnt work... now what??? I could use a diagram or free manuel to upload... can anyone out there help this poor stranded girl??? 1992 VW Passat... no its not the battery...

First, try rocking your machine back and forth as you try to shift it; especially if it has been stopped in an incline. Next, do take an extra battery along with you as your battery may be starting to fail and may not be able to deliver enough current to complete the shift

You will have to look for the neutral lock out switch on the gear shift lever or linkage and replace it, you might be able to find it in the counsel or go under the car to find it. you could splice the wires together and bypass it but thats not a good idea

I am not sure of the auto transmission sensor, but you are absolutely right, there is shift selector that tells the on board computer the car is in neutral or park. any other position and it will not start. I would say it would be located on the transmission where the shift cable hooks to the transmission. I can't remember weather it is on the outside or in the trans itself. It would make sense for it to be on the outside.

Might want to check for any codes first and then while vehicle is running, check for any vacuum leaks.

You can shift between 2Hi and 4Hi when the truck is moving. Just let off the gas and shift it. But in order to shift to Neutral or 4Lo you need to stop the truck and shift the transmission into neutral then shift the transfer case.

COULD BE FAULTY TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH OR NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH.

The gearshift neutral start interlock switch is faulty.
Check / replace it - should fix your problems.

I would first check to see if you have the proper transmission level of fluid. From your discription, it seems that the fluid is low. If it is full, you have some more major issues. Hope this helps you, Rick

e the neutral safety switch looked at....it should start in neutral anytime you have this problem.

start car put it in neutral shift 4x4 lever into 4x4 low then drive a few feet. now shift main trans back to neutral then move 4x4 shifter back to 2wd high for normal driving then shift in drive and drive for a few min light should turn off..if nor disconnect battery for 15 min to reset computer and see if that does it. if that doesnt work you may need 4x4 linkage adjusted ..do you have a lift?
