When i go to put my car into reverse it starts grinding really bad but if i barely hold the clutch in and ease on the gas it will start to back up if i am on flat ground. a few people have told me that my synchronizer might be out but my other gears work just fine i just need to know if i should get a whole new transmission or what?
SOURCE: reverse on my 97 volkswagen jetta
your transmission does not have a synchronized reverse gear. it is an easy fix you just have to remove the transmission (i can do it in about an hour on a hoist) and remove the cover closest to the left side of the vehicle. there you will see that the reverse idler gear is stripped. replace it. clean up the metal shavings and change the trans fluid.
