Check the large hose between the air filter and the engine. Sometimes if there is a crack in the hose, it will cause a air leak.

My son's 92 Plymouth Acclaim, occasionally sputters when approaching a stop & stalls when completely stopped. A previous owner set the idle speed pretty high apparently to try to correct. ...

Hello -- It could be what's called an IAC (idle air control valve) -- if it is acting up while running vehicle prior to operating temperature. The speed sensor would be more in tune with making the speedometer read how fast you are traveling. You could check the haynes or chiltons repair manual at your local library - call ahead to be sure of availability, alternatively most auto parts store have them for like $20 - again call ahead for availability.

1990 Ford Probe 2.2 automatic stalls in forward, reverse OK

Sounds like a bad IAC (idle air control valve/sensor) that controls your idle when going from throttle to idle. If bad your idle will act crazy and can cause stalls easily. Pretty sure that's it.
