Hello -- It could be what's called an IAC (idle air control valve) -- if it is acting up while running vehicle prior to operating temperature. The speed sensor would be more in tune with making the speedometer read how fast you are traveling. You could check the haynes or chiltons repair manual at your local library - call ahead to be sure of availability, alternatively most auto parts store have them for like $20 - again call ahead for availability. Best regards

COULD BE STOPPED UP FUEL FILTER.SOUND LIKE YOU HAVE LEAN FUEL SYSTEM.WHEN YOU STEP ON ACCELERATOR ENGINE STALL OUT DUE TO LOW OR WEAK FUEL DEMAND.MORE YOU REP UP ENGINE IT NEEDS MORE FUEL.
the pipe on the fuel pump has perished by the sound of it,remove the sender unit with the pump built in ,look under the back seat for the inspection cover
that car should have several fusible links usually coming off battery, starter switch, or starter solenoid... also make sure you are getting power to the ignition switch
Sounds like a bad IAC (idle air control valve/sensor) that controls your idle when going from throttle to idle. If bad your idle will act crazy and can cause stalls easily. Pretty sure that's it.
see if the fuel pump primes the car when u put the key forward listen towards the gas tank do you hear a buzzing sound? if not u need to replace the fuel pump.. replacing the spark plugs on the motor is not fun at all i bet u guys had a real good time doing that haha..
