If the boot is split you will have to take apart the ball joint in order to fit a new boot. It is a good time to see if there is any play in the ball joint.
If all is ok fit the new boot after greasing the joint.

do what i do make your own ,these rubber boots are not sold separate so when i prepare a vehicle for the annual vehicle mechanical inspection i will cut some thin rubber then wrap it around and tie it up with some thin bailing wire ,or as i call it my bodgeing wire .

theres 2 ways too fix that!! one is get some brass shiw stock it comes in a roll get about .005 thick! wrap several layers around the knuckle pin where is goes into the socket and then tigthen it up that will remove the play also you can heat the socket with a torch and then take a hammer and shrink the hole opening but if you call beards salvage in tulsa okla they can and will sell/ship you one

Ball joints can stay in place. I generally disconnect the tie rod end to make it easier to work. You need to remove the axle nut, brake caliper and rotor then the bearing hub. The axle comes through the hole where the hub was. I recommend that you get a rebuilt axle as once dirt gets into the joint it gets unreliable and the price of just the joint is so close to what a reman axle costs, it is worth the $ just in aggravation elimination alone!

1000 dollars for this simple job ?' you joking or what ,parts are not that expensive but its the tools you need to change them and the time alsoi its a dirty job at the best of times ,grease boots -- now do you mean the drive shaft rubber boot or the ball joint rubber boot ,anyway the ball joints are rivited on so you cut the rivits off with a hammer and chisel then bolt the new ball joint in ,not difficult but the drive coupling boots are a bit more difficult and require circlip pliers and a lot of patience

To perform the following procedure, the lower control arm must be removed from the vehicle. Refer to Removal And Installation for that procedure.
NOTE: When installing ball joint in lower control arm, position the ball joint in control arm so notch in ball joint stud is in the direction shown. This will ease assembly of the ball joint to the steering when installing pinch bolt.
CAUTION: Do not use an arbor press to install the sealing boot on the ball joint. Damage to the sealing boot will occur if excessive pressure is applied to the sealing boot when it is being installed.
CAUTION: A replacement ball joint is not pre-lubricated. Properly lubricate the replacement ball joint using Mopar Multi-Mile grease or an equivalent. Lubricate ball joint after seal boot is installed but prior to top of seal boot being pushed down below notch in ball joint stud. Air must vent out of the seal boot at notch when grease is pumped into ball joint, failure to do so will balloon and damage seal boot. Do not over grease the ball joint, this will prevent the seal boot from pushing down on the stud of the ball joint.
CAUTION: After the ball joint is properly greased, clip the end of the grease fleeing off below the hex. The ball joint seal boot is non-purgeable and further greasing is not required and can result in damage to the seal boot.
