Clanking could mean you have a worn out rod bearing take it to a shop and let them have a listen..you shouldnt drive this car in this condition, it might cause even more damage if you continue to drive it.

318i two door automatic, engine does not turn over, despite fully charged battery. Get a single clanking sound when ignition is turned to start position. Could this mean starter motor problems or somethin...

Sounds like the starter. The single clank sound could be the solenoid slamming into position, but then it's not turning. Check the heavy wire to the starter. The smaller wire feeds the solenoid, but the fat wire provides the power to actually turn over the engine. Check the ground wire, although that would kill the solenoid also, so it's unlikely.

Unless the engine is totally seized!

2003 pontiac sunfire makes clanking sound from engine, sounds like valves? lifters make more of a ticking sound...right?

valves do not normally make a sound unless the seat insert is loose in the head. This will be revealed by a compression test. I suspect that a clanking sound is much lower in the engine --like a big end failure.

Accelleration noises of the magnitude you descibe makes me think the engines crank shaft bearings have gone. Has the oil pressure light come on recently and what's the oil level like.
Without being there to hear it, it's very difficult to diagnose. You should detect noises and rattle if you rev it when in neutral if it is the engine. If the engine is smooth in neutral and the oil is good you may have a bad diff or cv joint

Oil light flashes on and off

Your description sounds serious. The next step is to check the oil level, then check the oil pressure with an external gauge. If the pressure is low, the news is not good and you need to disassemble the engine until you find the issue. The clanking does description does not sound good.

Check your oil level? If not do that 1st and get back to whoever did the maintenance NOW before the engine blows. Because it sure sounds like they did something wrong.

Engine won't turn over.

I'm afraid what you're describing sounds like your bearings went out. Your engine is probably seized up or blown. There is no cheap or easy fix for this problem, your engine will have to be rebuilt or replaced.

83 vw rabbit gti clanking/knocking sound

That doesnt sound good. Check the engine oil level and top up as necessary. If the noise is still there, then you should take it to a mechanic to check. It could mean that you need to either replace the engine or overhaul it. Hope that helps
