2001 nissan altima with a stuck gas cap door. Lever in front ''seems'' to be working. But mechanism is not releasing. Best way to manually open it.

Your problem has two options ;first, you have to inspect the interior wire that pulls the lock of the gas cap.If found cut you should replace it at the mechanic's. Secondly, once the wire remains uncut or undamaged by any reason, the lock itself might be jammed due to the rust or misuse. Therefore, you are advised to use some anti rust liquid it wil work. My gas door will not open on my 2012 Nissan Maxima.
It looks to be pushed in too far

I'm having this problem with my 2003 nissan maxima. I keep the driver side door open and keep my hand at the edge where the fuel door hinge is, and reache the button with a screwdriver or pen, and as it press the button, I push on the fuel door panel and it comes out. I'm going to replace the fuel door sooner or later. It all looks kinda dumb at the gas station.

Try pushing that same lever downwards, hard.

Check to see if there is an emergency manual cable release in the trunk.

usually down at the drivers seat, between the seat and the drivers door, down low.

check to the left hand side of the driver's seat, or under the steering wheel, or by hood latch. Their should be another release in the trunk also.

should be at the side of the drivers seat by the front , on the floor .

OPENER OPERATION
The fuel-filler door release is located on the floor
to the left of the driver.s seat. To open the fuel-
filler door, pull up the release. To lock, close the
fuel-filler door securely.

If you can't glue the handle back on, e.g. with urethane glue (gorilla glue, Elmers Nano, etc.; use as directed, cleaning lever and plastic cover with soap and water just before gluing) then you can just buy a part like Nissan 84640-9E000 (1998 Altima exact replacement; Nissan call it a Handle- Trunk & Gas Door Release.)

That will work fine as long as the gas filler door mechanism isn't messed up; go check for obstructions once you open the door, presumably by using a small locking pliers over a cloth or some rubber on the lever (or the cable wire.)

The trick is, you get to replace it with the door open; use a blade screwdriver to pry the running-board trim up, unscrew the bolt on the trim to the left and pry that off, undo some expander bolts holding the carpet across the running-board area, and wrangle the carpet away from the lever you want to replace.  Some 10mm wrench work gets the lever loose, and you tilt the loosened stuff forwards to be able to remove the cable.  Regrease the bolts and cable run as well as you can.  Thread the new handle through the carpet before you bolt it in; it's harder to set up and bolt, but you don't have to cut the carpet or remove the seat!
