timming check your timming marks on timming chain cover with timming light, some use magnetic pickup? i am not familliar with the latter
the purpose is to make sure that your inital timming is set properly
if to high,or to low, it can cause a miss , rough idle, and stalling,or even back fire through exaust , or intake

I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo it misfires when idleing I changed the plugs yesterday it didn't start doing that until I changed the plugs

Carefully check your routing and make sure that all spark plug wires are attached to the correct spark plugs otherwise your firing order will be mixed up and cause the issue you are having. Also make sure that the wires are firmly seated on the coil packs or distributor, whichever is on your vehicle.

1996 jeep Gc laredo 4.0 should the dist rotor point to #1 cyl at tdc

at tdc your rotor has to be pointed at five o' clock for the engine to start. first position the oil pump slot at 5 and 11 o"clock and when the distributor seats the rotor must point at 5 o clock. it will not be centered on the #1 cylinder position, but a little before.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 4 wd - changed wires, distributor cap and rotor - now it will not start? Did verify the firing and that all were plugged in correctly.

If the wires are in the correct order, also make sure that you used the correct starting point, otherwise the base timing can be off by as much as 60 degrees. Turn the engine till the crank damper timing mark is pointing to 0 or tdc on the timing scale. If the rotor is pointing towards the engine, turn one more time. #1 is roughly when the rotor is pointing towards the passenger headlamp. Order is in the direction the rotor turns when cranking. If the engine was running with no problems before the change, only other thing could be that you inadvertently unplugged something or the security system armed. Other possibility is that if you did the change due to a running problem, whatever was causing that finally failed.
If when you remove the cap again you find that the rotor is damaged, check the dist shaft for side play.
Are you getting spark?
