Most common problem is the IAC(Idle Air Control) valve. But if you say some times work I will suspect the throttle is clogged. Remove the Air hose, apply full throttle and hold, spray carburetor cleaner on clot using thin long nose player clean inside wall and throttle. don't spray directly inside because the carb cleaner is to aggressive for some of the gasket.
Good Luck
It sound like a clogged catalytic converter. It chokes the engine with exhaust gasses. How many miles on the car? There is a test that shops can do to check- they will drill a small hole before and after the catalytic converter and have a small device to measure its flow.
you have a air leak could be the intake manifold of and air line check for leaks with carb cleaner spray the area the engine will either die or speed up depends on carb cleaner. the area you spray will be were the leak is.
check your spark plugs, also the air filter. if they don't look right replace them, if the spark plugs have the blue writing on them change the they been in from new back in 2000.
P0017 cam position sensor actuator system. This is for the exhaust side, This is not the cam position sensor, This is the actuator,Manufacuter has done away with EGR valves and the ability to do away with valve overlap,The cam sensor actuator is either plug from lack of oil maintance ot just doesnt work,Yes you can take it out and clean the ports with brake cleaner or carb cleaner. The location is at the front of the cylinder head
Hi Big,
Have the fuel filter replaced and if the fault persists take the vehicle taken for an electronic scan. You may that the fault is the air flow sensor, or an intermittent fault with either the crank or cam sensor. The scan will pin point where the problem is.

I replaced the Cam Shaft Sensor. I also cleaned the Throttle Body with carb cleaner. I had my wife hold down the accelerator, while running I sprayed down the throttle plate and the entire area around it. Now my TB finally idles smoothly, and it hasn't died yet!! Check engine light is gone and I passed the emissions test!! Yea!!!
