Jerky feeling in steering wheel in turns. I have 4 w/d and I have a friend that has a 2006 silverado and they replaced some plastic bushings in the gearbox and it had less than 25000 miles. I just turned 53000 and my factory warranty will expire in August. This is not a power steering issue but more like what my fried was dealing with.

Big difference between steering box and gear box
as the date is now November , it is out of warranty
take it to an accredited service center and have the problem properly identified and diagnosed

SOURCE: jerky steering in 1999 GMC Suburban

A common problem with this model. Its the sterring speed sensor.A small disc shaped switch at the bottom of the steering shaft next to the floor. IT actually slips over the steering shaft, so, you'll have to disconnect shaft, pull column back towads you to replace. The reason for this switch is to stiffen steering at higher speed.Once it goes bad it starts sending mixed signals to the steering box. A simple fix? Unplug it at the switch like I did mine after I replaced it the second time.

I agree with Saint. When ever a lift is installed, the strain on all steering components is amplified. So is the play when a ball joint starts to go. Checking all ball joints for rigidity is needed. If you can move one easily by hand, replace it.

Have a look at the truck I'm standing in front of in my avatar. I've got some experience in this area. ; )

SOURCE: steering problem

If it is 4wd you may have a problem with your front differential. GMCs are known for having front differential axle seals leaking. If all the fluid is out metal parts may be binding.

SOURCE: 2006 GMC 2500HD Duramax, started and let idle

Freezing temps? you may need the power steering pump pressure checked, a weak pump may do that???. Be sure it has the correct fluid , tire pressures to spec? could just be normal??? Have a dealer check it over. Service Bulletin 05-02-32-008B You may not worry about it until it gets worse, if the dealer checks it when its acting normal, they wont be able find anything wrong.

Steering wheel not centered, when making a full turn feels like wheel is going to pop off

Could be a multitude of things. I've seen CV joints bad enough that when into a hard full turn at a relatively slow speed, the wheel does feel like it will come off. This doesn't exist as much at highway speeds. I would tend to think you are more likely to have a problem with the front suspension and tie rod ends than in the steering system itself.

You can visaully check the front end by turning your wheel hard left and crawling undeneath (usually dont have to be very much under the car) then check the "play", look for worn rubber bushings, rubber boots that are split, anything that looks obviously "bent" or anything leaking.. especially when the wheel is truned as far as it will go to the left. When one side of the the car shows wear on that axles and the other doesn't, you should notice a difference in the tread wear on one tire. Also if one side has bad CV joint and the other doesn't, you could experience symptoms like you mentioned

If you are hearing a "clicking noise" in turns, that is the bad CV joint. Even with a CV joint on tis way out, at higway speeds you will not really notice much. Only when you are turning especially when turning UP a grade.

If you have power steering, try this" on level ground start the engine and allow it to warm up. Have a friend stand in front of the car and on your signal, tell you the minute he sees the hweels begiun to turn as you slowly work the steering wheel one way, then the other. If you have turned your hands more than 2-3-4 inches from straight by the time your friend says he sees the wheel start to turn,. you have possible play in your steering system that could be dangerous.

You can also take a lug wrench and hand test the tighness of the wheel to the lugs or studs. After you have done the above and cannot dtermine the cause, I think it is time to take the car to the shop and have them put it on a lift for a full inspection.

Sterring column worn out 1989 silverado 4 wheel

The best option is related to the actual damage on the unit which needs a good observation and check. If the bushes are worn out on the column then this can be overhauled at a machine shop. If the damage is more then there best way is to replace to give you the best performance.
Also the spares for the steering ends, joints and linkages must be checked to be free of any PLAY or SHAKE.
Thank You for using Fixya.

The steering just became much harder to turn while

1. Check if the belt on the power-steering pump is not slipping. Replace belt if so.

2. Check for oil leaks (if yes, there is air in system).

2006 Pontiac G6 front wheel vibration

sounds like your front end is worn out and yes tie rod ends are a common source of this problem along with out of balance tires and seperated tire cords, any tire store will inspect your car for free and give you an estimate to repair.

Knocking noise

If the knocking sound is coming from the steering wheel area itself, then I believe it's the nylon bushing in the steering colum. My friend had the same problem with his truck. The other trucks we work on at the shop seem to have this common problem.

If it's sounds like its outside the truck, have the tie rod ends checked out.
