1985 Dodge Ram runs rough and stalls at idle.

Okay here is the deal. I have the slant 6 in a 1985 Dodge Ram D150. I love the truck but I'm currently at wits end trying to get her running again. The current problem is that when I start the truck all will run fine for about a minute and then it will start running rough. It continues to get worse untill the engine just stalls.

Now on to the past history. I had a bad re-manfucured carb so I broke down and rebulit the orignal. I did not change any of the air mixture screws, as my primary focus was cleaning the passageways and repalcing the jets. Also, I checked my Ignition coil and found it was just outside of spec, so I changed that out. I installed a new cap, roter and plug wires. No I didn't change the spark plugs. Because I thought that the problem was with the electronic spark control I repalced that too. I removed the vacume hose from the EGR valve and the engine ran a little better, or so I thought, before it stalled again. If I remove the air cleaner when she starts to idle rough, she just dies right then and there.

There is a carb problem as you discribe it runs too rich and when it warms up some the engine can't handle all that extra fuel and stalls. Blows black smoke out the exhaust? do the exhaust manfolds leak at the cylinder head connection and or worse is the manifold cracked? The EGR valve sounds possible as the valve being partly open will make it do what you say. A thin peice of medal can be cut with sissors and put between the EGR and it's manifold and then tighten down will stop that leak. If it runs good then replace the EGR , or run it like that if you don't have to face a safty lane inspection. The PCV valve can do this too and or a hole or crack in it's hose. Remove it from the vale cover and let it hang in the end of the hose. If it runs OK now the oil has been gassed when you were having you carb trobles and as the oil heats up it fumes enoght to make the engine choke on the extra fumes of fuel. You don't nee to change the plugs if you don't want to but you should check them and maybe tourch them off with a propane tourch to clean off soot and other grime that comes from a motor thats not running right. Bet gas in the oil. Fuel pump can leak gas into the oil also. More oftem than you might think and still work.

What kind of oil to use for a 1987 Dodge D150 Slant 6

You can use any oil you want. Just make sure that if you don't know what oil is in it currently that you drain the oil out and change the oil filter. Personally, I like the Chevron RPM oils and have two vehicles with over 200,000 miles that says they are good.

2003 dodge ram 5.7L intermittently has a rough idle and an idle rpm of 500 I think the normal is 650. When I put it in gear the idle picks up and smooths out. Sometimes it will do this in gear and stall...

okay, the o2 code can cause problems, theres a problem with one of the o2 sensors, theres 2 or 4 sensors, the repair was not done right or theres another bad o2 sensor, next thing i would check is the idle air control motor, this sounds like it sticks at time or just stops working, start with these things first,

My 1986 dodge ram slant 6 when starting cold needs to be pumped hard and stalls and does not run well till it is warmed up then runs just fine.

You need to have the choke adjusted on the carburetor. Are you familiar enough with it to try yourself? Usually only takes a few minutes, and best to do it when engine is cold.

1985 dodge ramcharger, carburetor issues

Sounds like a problem I had with my '85 Dodge D150 Ram Prospector. In my case, the automatic choke was broken and it was starved for air during acceleration because the choke was always closed. It ran fine at idle or very slow acceleration. I wired the choke open and it runs much better, although it is much more difficult to start as the fuel mix is lean due to the extra air. Once it gets warmed up, though, it runs fine. I hear that the barrel carb on mine often has problems.
