STARTER REPLACEMENT ( 1995-97 4.3L MODELS )

how to change a starter on a 4.3 gmc sonoma 1997 - ad8746e.jpg

Fig.: The starter motor on later model 4.3L engines is retained by two long bolts

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the front of the truck safely using jackstands.
  3. If necessary for access, disconnect the front exhaust pipe.
  4. If equipped, remove the starter heat shield.
  5. On the 2.2L engine, remove the brace rod from the front of the engine and the bell housing.
  6. On 2.2L engines, remove the drivers side wheel to access the starter motor wires and the starter motor attaching bracket-to-engine bolt through the opening in the wheel well.
  7. Disengage the wires from the starter solenoid.
  8. On the 2.2L engine, remove the attaching bracket-to-engine mount bolt.
  9. Remove the starter-to-engine block bolts. When removing the last bolt, be sure to support the starter to keep it from falling and possibly injuring you.
  10. Carefully lower the starter and shims (if equipped) from the vehicle.
  11. If necessary, remove the bracket (2.2L engine) or the shield (4.3L engine) from the starter assembly.

To install:
  1. If removed, install the bracket or shield to the starter, as applicable. Tighten the bracket nuts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm) or the shield nuts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  2. Carefully raise the starter and shims (if equipped) into position in the vehicle and thread one of the retaining bolts to hold it in position.
  3. On the 2.2L engine, loosely install the bracket-to-engine mount bolt.
  4. Install the remaining starter mounting bolt, then tighten all mounting fasteners to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  5. Engage the wiring to the solenoid as noted during removal.
  6. On the 2.2L engine, install the brace rod and tighten the retainers.
  7. If disconnected for access, install the front exhaust pipe and tighten the fasteners.
  8. If equipped, install the starter heat shield.
  9. On 2.2L engines, install the drivers side wheel.
  10. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the truck.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hope this help (remember rated this help) Good luck.

SOURCE: 1999 GMC sonoma starte installation

2.2L Engine remove protective shields as needed then remove front exhaust pipe. Remove the brace from the engine to the clutch housing, then disconnect starter wiring. 4.3L Engine 2 wheel drive just remove the right front tire and you will have access to the wiring. 4.3L Engine 4 wheel drive you must remove the differential carrier shield if equipped then remove the starter bolts and rotate the starter to get access to the wiring. Good Luck.

SOURCE: HOW TO CHANGE DRIVE BELT ON MY 98 GMC SONOMA 4

it may be easier to attach the breaker bar to the tensioner arm from under the vehicle to relieve belt tension

a281459.gif
a35a276.gif

  1. On 1994-97 2.2L engines and 1994-96 4.3L engines, using a 1/2 in. breaker bar and if necessary, with a socket placed on the tensioner pulley bolt, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to relieve the belt tension. On some 2.2L engines it may be easier to attach the breaker bar to the tensioner arm from under the vehicle.
  2. On 1998-99 2.2L engines and 1997-99 4.3L engines, using a 3/8 in. breaker bar, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to relieve the belt tension. On some 2.2L engines it may be easier to attach the breaker bar to the tensioner arm from under the vehicle.
  3. Remove the serpentine belt.
To install:
  1. Route the belt over all the pulleys except the tensioner.
  2. Place the breaker bar and if necessary the socket, on the tensioner pulley bolt and rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to the released position.
  3. Install the belt and return the pulley slowly to its original position. Do not let the pulley snap back into position as this may damage the belt and pulley.
  4. Check that the belt is properly seated in each pulley.

SOURCE: how do I install starter for 2000 GMC Sonoma

the starter will be located on the lower right side of the engine and it is located near some key components for your vehicles ignition system. If you do not consider yourself at least a "B" level technician, I would suggest that you take it to a nearby shop in which u trust.

2002 GMC Sonoma replace starter.

Not an easy job due to the space being tight. You need a jack, a set of axle stands, a socket set and a set of wrenches.

1997 GMC Sonoma with 4 cyl engine. The truck runs great, but after the engine warms up, the oil pressure drops to around 12 from 50 when cold. is this the oil pump and how do i change?

Depending on oil type (IE: synthetic, etc) this is normal. If using conventional oil then I'd be concerned. To replace oil pump you'll need to remove pan and it is bolted to lower part of engine.

CHANGING STARTER ON 94 SONOMA

Hi Terrie- You can go to '94 GMC Somoma Repair' and there are numerous sites. But I think you have to remove the 4 prong wire (may have to wait for entire unit before removing red lead?) and crossmember (only 4 bolts?) and/or then loosen 1 bolt then remove other-thenstand it up and turn around before you slide out and down. Not that big-o-deal but it helps to know before you go in(you can call |GMC and ask Service Dept. Good luck and God bless

Purchase a timing light and check your engine time against the front pulley and the timing scale located around your timing chain cover. If you have recently had your timing belt or chain replaced you could be a tooth off.
With regard to your ABS light the easiest thing to check or replace is the speed sensor on the wheel. Because this is a magnetic pick-up sensor and due to the location (on the wheel behind the rotor) can be susceptible to corrosion. That is also the most common cause of an illuminated ABS light. Do you have 4 or 2 wheel anti lock? The 4 wheel abs doesn't change what could be wrong, it just means you have more speed sensors to check.
