I have a 1994 bmw 318 and I am starting to hear a high pitch shrieking sound coming from the engine area. When I pull out the oil dipstick the shrieking sound disappears but there appears to be some cracking noise coming from the dip stick hole. Possibly related is that I have recently found my coolant fluid level went almost to zero and could not find any obvious leak. The oil looked fine and it doesn't appear to be mixed with water. I have just topped the coolant recently. Thanks!

Look for Castrol TWS 10W60 Motor Oil. This car should not burn so much oil, you need to use a different kind. It is recommended by BMW as well. I also heard the VANOS isnt an issue anymore, can be fixed with a different MAFF. Good luck!

have you replaced the bleeder screws? and the expansion tank cap they both have O-rings that compress and will fail over time also check the hose at the top of the exp tank it also has o-rings inside it

no filter, sounds like the steering rack is worn out and need to be rebuilt.
SOURCE: BMW 325i BAD transmission fluid leak/gush
i have to admit without more detail it's hard to say.... my educated guess would be that one of the hoses to the transmission cooler has blow and needs to be replaced. do NOT drive the car till that is done.

SOURCE: BMW X3 2.5si M series. High Oil Consumption
hi, this consumption seems high, i would take it to a dealer and ask them to check the oil sensor.......
P.S. is there a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust, if so, it may be burning a little oil, ask dealer to check it
