I have a 07 chevy cobalt. It makes a rattling noise that seems to be coming from the dashboard in front of the passenger seat. It makes this rattling noise usually when going over bumps, but it can rattle on smooth roads as well, and at any speed. This rattling noise has been happening for about 2 years now, and the 2 dealships that I have taken the car to can not figure out the problem. I have had the steering rack replaced, intermediate steering shaft replaced, steering column replaced, and had chassis ears installed, and all this did not eliminate the rattling noise. What could be making this noise and how is it fixed?

There was a recall a year ago on some PLASTIC parts that were installed in the steering colum you may incuire at your dealership, this is covered under the recall and will not cost you anything.

Had same problem with new 04 Sierra, took multiple times to dealer. Final answer after 2-3 warranty replacements and repacks was that I should just live with it. The dealer suggested that I unbolt the steering column at the mid section (under the hood), and stroke the steering column back and forth. After getting over the fact that they wanted me to **** my truck off, to fix their crappy parts I gave it a try and it worked great. Needs to be done every few months. Don't mess with the bolts by the PS pump, just the single 15mm bolt halfway down. The back side is a bracket with welded nut on it so you just need 15mm socket. Paint match lines on both halfs. Pump the upper shaft back and forth after you slide it out from lower shaft. Takes about 5 minutes time.
The dealer said the grease gets hot and oozes down to bottom of tube so stroking redistributes it back up into the upper shaft.

It's a loose steering column. Remove the black plastic shield under the steering wheel. Lossen the bolt that holds the two shafts together, slide them together as far as they'll go, and re-tighten the bolt. It's that simple... to stop that annoying rattle.

Try the cupholder on the drivers side. Then, if it's like the issue I had, push the plastic around the dimmerswitch wheel in toward the rest of the dashboard. THAT'S where the rattle was for my car. Also a 40mph and above issue. If that doesn't do it, try putting pressure on different parts of the dash to eliminate the fitting together of the molded plastic as the issue. Other then that, I'd have to be there to see what it could be!

Most likely the noise is coming from the bearing on the top of the front struts. Quite often when struts are replaced they do not replace the complete assembly but replace just the "shock absorber part" This does not take care of a loose bearing. You need to specify that you want the complete assembly replaced which includes spring, strut, and bearing assembly.
