Sound like you are in need of a new fuel level sensor. You have a burn on the wire wrap. problem is not sure if yours is available without purchasing a complete fuel pump

98 oldmobile cutlass fuel gage will go to full when filled but as soon as it uses 1/4 of a tank it (the gage) drops and i dont know how much gas is in there

there is a fault with the sending unit in the fuel tank, if the gauge can move to full when you fill the tank it is good.
only way i know how to test the sending unit is to take it out of the fuel tank and hook a meter to the float wires, move the float manually and the meter will go to zero if the unit is bad

Gas gage not working on a 1991 ford bronco

I have the same problem with my jeep, i was told that the sensor in the fuel tank should be checked, so far i have just gotten use to using my spedometer gage, i have calculated that i can go 400k on a full tank of gas(20 gallon tank), so everytime i fuel up i push the button so it goes back to zero and just watch how many klicks i go , This will help you till you get your fuel gage or sensor fixed

My gas gauge moves periodically and I do not ever know the correct amount of fuel in my car. Do I have to replace the fuel pump? Or do i have to replace the cluster of gauges?

Your question is not clear. Your fuel pump has little to do with the gas gage. The gage is suppose to move up and down as you use gas and fill the tank. Replacing the cluster is very expensive though you may be able to replace that particular element of the cluster. More likely, I would suspect the sender unit in the fuel tank is faulty. This sensor works in a manner similar to the water valve in your toilet tank, but it is electric, of course. In your fuel tank, the float can 'sink' or get stuck. The electrical windings can become faulty. I don't know what the trouble is with your sender, but I can tell you it is expensive to fix as it requires the removal of your fuel tank .. If you do this, it is dirty, hard and dangerous work. If you have your mechanic do it ... it is dirty, hard and dangerous work @ $ some prevailing shop rate.

Here is what I recommend to you ... forget about the fuel gage. Your car probably can travel 300 miles on one tank of gas. Set your trip meter when you fill up the gas and never go more than 200 miles without filling up. I do something similar, though for entirely different reasons. My car gets horrible mileage ... you cannot guess how few miles I get on a gallon of gas. I try to fill around 100 miles so I can afford to get away from the gas station. I watch the trip meter like a hawk!

I hope you found these comments helpful. If you did, the courtesy of a positive evaluation and remark will be appreciated.

1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager Fuel Gage issue

It sounds like the fuel level sending unit located on the fuel pump is malfunctioning. The solution for this is to have it replaced. You can do this yourself but I wouldn't recommend it as the vehicle needs to be lifted and the fuel tank needs to be dropped out. This can be preformed for about 100-150 in most shops.

I have a 1991 buick park avenue ultra

Speedometer or fuel gage?

If speedometer which is bouncing around, it is likely a bad ground near where the speed sensor wire harness (which connects the speed sensor to the rest of the "network") exits the transmission housing. It's at the very back of the transmission (you have a 4T60E trans) to the left of where the right side half-shaft leaves the trans housing. Just look for damaged wires. If none, replace the speed sensor for $50-60.

If it is the fuel gage, the sensor is probably not "zeroed"--it's reading wrong, too high, and if it were to start at true "empty", it would read right. Thus, the gage is always reading a little high (maybe a 1/8-1/10th of a tank too high?). This isn't a problem until to stop, start, or turn quickly and cause the fule to slosh around in the tank and starve the in-tank pickup which sends fuel to the engine.

If it is the fuel gage, you should simply put as much fuel in as you can and see if the needle goes far above "F". If it does, note how far it went and then practice filling the tank when the needle is that same distance above "E".

Hope this helps.
