Oil level light comes on inthe afternoon on 1995 cadillac 4.9 when coming to astop

It can mean one of two things. Either your oil level is too low, meaning more than 1 quart, or your pressure is too low. The first thing to do is check the oil level in the engine and top it up. If the light goes out after this then everything is okay. If the light stays on you should get the oil pressure checked with a mechanical guage to get an accurate reading.

Get this done as soon as possible. Manufacturers don't give you much room with these lights, when they come on you are very close to the engine meltdown point. Hope this helps.

well check oil level to make sure that oil level is good because thats what causes the light to come on low or no oil

{: ) It wants you to turn the car off based on its current reading that your oil pressure is low. It is some sort of protection for your engine. But why will you do that while on your trip? But to be very sure, you can check out the oil yourself manually. Check for proper oil level and look for any signs of oil leak.
If the oil check is fine, you can continue driving and deal with low oil pressure light later, when you are ready. If the oil system is at proper levels and no leaks, it can probably be a faulty oil sensor, a wiring, or a module issue. It can also be an oil pump problem. The worst that can happen is a weak engine compression. I suggest you go to your autoshop to check the problem as soon as possible.

Did you check your oil level? If the oil level is OK and the light will not shut off, check the connector at the oil level sensor. It is located in the side of the engine oil pan. If the connector and wires are OK, then you may need to replace the sensor. It simply screws out of the oil pan, but you will most likely lose a little oil in the process, so be sure to use a drain pan.

always start at the least expensive item. ths would be the oil filter. if its a double wall one,switch to a single. if this doesnt work,then test the oil sending unit. alot of the older caddys do this,and as long as you dont hear lifters tapping,i wouldnt sweat it.

Probably an oil pump, will it still do this if you rev the engine a little while stopped? If not then you have an oil pump that could be failing or hopefully it is the pressure sensor that is off. either way don't chance it
