Yellow light on dash, emissions workshop warning

Volkswagen vehicles built after 1996 are equippedwith a system of sensors known as On Board Diagnostics (OBD II). These sensorsmonitor many vital engine functions and help to lower harmful emissions. Whenone of these sensors fails it sends a signal to the engine computer to illuminate the "CheckEngine" light in the dash. To clear this light you will need a diagnosticcode scanner. Scanners range in price from $40 to $120 and are available atmost auto parts stores.

1. Connect the diagnostic code scanner to the vehicle's diagnostic port. Theport will be located in the dash below the heater controls.. 2. Turn the key to the"Run" position, but do not start the engine. 3. Press the button on thescanner that reads "Scan for trouble codes." 4. Wait for the scanner to finishscanning the engine's computer. 5. Press the button on thescanner labeled "Clear all trouble codes." 6. Disconnect the diagnostic codescanner from the vehicle. Emission workshop warning light

You need the OBD codes checked to be certain of the problem. If engine is running ok with the light on, it may well be an oxygen sensor problem.

Emmissions light has come on?

you need to get it scanned, i assume "emissions light" is your check engine light, or the "visit emissions workshop" message, which means, go to a shop and get it checked. The coolant disappearing means you probably have a leak. Another reason to check it,

VW Passat 2001: Exhaust emission warning lamp flashing. Manual says 'blinks if the catalyst can be damaged by misfires'. Any suggestions?

"Check engine light" EMISSIONS WORKSHOP! Do you want to shut it off??? After reading all of the negative comments and how much money Passat owners have spent due to this manufacturer's problem, I am going to save the day and save you $$$ by showing you how to "reset" the diagnostic computer which makes the "emissions workshop-check engine light come on! (This is the same thing the VW dealer will charge you hundreds of dollars to do.) To turn off the "Check Engine" (Emissions Workshop) light, simply follow these 5 basic steps:
1. Pop open the hood.
2. Insert the key in the ignition and turn without starting the engine until all of the dash indicators light and warning tones sound.
3. With the key still in the ignition, use a 10mm wrench or socket to loosen and completely disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery. Wait about 60 seconds before reconnecting.
4. Re-connect and tighten the negative (-) cable to the battery and close the hood.
5. Start the engine. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT HAS GONE OUT!
If the light stays on, then there really is a problem. If it has turned off, be glad, but don't be surprised to see it come on again in a few weeks. If it comes on again, simply follow steps 1-5. Remember... This quick repair is for those who just can't stand looking at this light or afford to visit VW every time this light comes on. If you feel the need to service the vehicle, service the vehicle. I hope this has made your "NIGHTMARE" a little easier!!!

Emissions Workshop on display

I had this problem myself and was told it could be one of 3 things

1. ignition coils are on their last legs and would need replacing (there are 4 of them in a VW golf)

2. The throttle housing is knackered and needs replacing as it has caused the motor that powers the accelerator to stop working and

3. The catalytic converter has an excess of carbon stored within it and has caused a defect.

All 3 of these jobs are notoriously expensive. Much to the delight of whoever it is you have gone to see....
