My steering wheel has lots of play up and down , side to side i removed steering wheel i'm stuck on how to get the rest apart to tighten bolts in steering column

You're best to remove the entire column and do it in the bench, if you can get a diagram it will help a lot, assembilng a steering column is tricky, some parts are spring loaded and others only assemble in in the proper order, you got the steering column out, now you will need a tool to depress the lock plate, remove the c clip and the plate, then remove the signal arm and fourway button, remove the signal switch plate remember how everything came out,you should be able to remove the steerin shafe and get at the four bolts holding the tilt mechanism, four reverse torx bolts, reassemble and install, good luck

    Removing the steering column from the vehicle won't make it any easier to take apart all the parts inside the steering wheel. It's just an extra step to deal with. Just get the right tools, refer to the internet or take pictures. It's no that hard to do...maybe 2-3 hours the first time.

There are YouTube videos on making repairs to GM tilt columns.
You have to remove the steering wheel to access the pivot joint and bolts. It takes a puller tool to get the wheel off and you have to disarm the air bag system.

1 Turn the steering wheel from side to side until it locks into place. This will make the process a bit easier, as the wheel won't be turning as you work.<br /><br />2 Remove the horn button in the center of the steering wheel by pulling it off towards you. This will expose the steering wheel nut at the center.<br /><br />3 Unbolt the center bolt from the steering wheel, using the 1/2-inch ratchet, extension and socket. This might free the steering wheel right away, but most likely you'll have to proceed to the next step.<br /><br />4 Position the steering wheel puller on the steering wheel such that the center bolt on the puller is on the center shaft of the wheel. Then thread in the bolts supplied with the puller into the two threaded holes on either side of the center shaft on the wheel.<br /><br />5 Tighten down the center bolt on the steering wheel puller using the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket until the steering wheel pops free. Then remove the steering wheel puller from the steering wheel.

How do you remove the steering wheel on 1988 GMC s15?
a lot of comments with no answer to the question. you need the steering wheel puller tool. take off the nut holding down the wheel and use the "Teering wheel puller" (peice of metal with 3 bolts) 2 bolts mount to the steering wheel to pull, and one bolt pushes on the rod that the nut was screwed on. that bolt pushes and the other 2 pull the steering wheel off.

How do you take the steering wheel off of a 1986 chevrolet c10

    Steering wheel moves 1/2 inch to the side
    It sounds like the upper steering colomn bowl is loose. The bolts come up from the bottom and hold the lower portion of the steering wheel cover to the upper. The steering shaft runs down thru the middle of both. If loose the steering wheel will rock side to side in the upper bearing race, not holding the shaft tight or straight. Its actually easier to remove the entire steering colomn, turn upside down and tighten. Remove the lower steering shaft at the firewall (mark the spline alignment). Disconnect the electrical connections at the lower colomn. Disconnect shifter (if not floor console shifter). Unbolt from dash and remove the entire colomn, with wheel attached. Flip over and chek the lower bolts for tightness. It can be done from disassembling the colomn, but its a lot of work and lots of little pieces to loose.

    How to replace steering rack
    Copied from AutoZone.com:
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2. Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position and remove the key from the ignition.
    3. Turn the wheel counterclockwise in order to lock the steering column in place.
    4. Raise and support the vehicle.
    5. Remove the front wheels.
      WARNING Do not rotate the intermediate shaft once separated from the gear. Possible damage or a malfunction could occur.

    6. Remove the steering gear to intermediate shaft pinch bolt and discard.
    7. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
    8. Remove both steering gear outer tie rod to knuckle nuts and discard the nuts.
      WARNING Do not attempt to separate the joint using a wedge type tool.
    9. Separate the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.
    10. Remove the steering gear bolts.
    11. Remove the rear transaxle mount.
    12. Carefully remove the steering gear from the frame and the vehicle through the LH wheel opening.

    To install:
    1. Install the steering gear to the frame through the LH wheel opening.
    2. Install the steering gear bolts. Tighten the bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
    3. Install the rear transaxle mount. Tighten the rear transaxle mount to frame bolts. Tighten the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    4. Tighten the rear transaxle mount thru bolt. Tighten the thru bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    5. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear.
    6. Install a new intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Tighten the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
    7. Install the outer tie rods to the steering knuckles.
    8. Install new outer tie rod nuts. Tighten the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    9. Install the front wheels.
    10. Lower the vehicle.
    11. Adjust the toe if necessary.

    How do i take off the steering wheel in my Corsica?
    You need a steering wheel puller to take it off. You may be able to rent one but they are not that expensive to buy. It looks like a Y shaped piece of metal with a slot in the tail and 3 slots in the Y end. It has a large bolt in the center and an assortment of bolts in different sizes to bolt it to the steering wheel. The steering wheel has bolt holes beside the center nut for these bolts.
    Once you get it hooked up and tightened up give the large center tightening bolt a sharp rap with a hammer and then tighten it again. You will likely have to do this 2 or 3 times before the wheel comes off. Hope this helps.

    Having a hard time with puller to remove steering wheel
    Ok, after you remove the pad in the center of the steering wheel, you will see a large nut in the center with a triangle shaped clip. Use a screwdriver to remove the clip and remove the nut from the steering shaft ( probably a 19mm-21mm or 3/4"-7/8" ) After you have this off, you set the pin of the puller in the dent of the steering shaft. Screw two bolts through the slots on the sides of the puller into the holes on either side of the shaft. When these bolts are tight, start to tighten the puller shaft until it starts to tighten against the bolts. Continue to tighten this down slowly. If you feel alot of resistance, you can bump the back of the steering wheel on either side to loosen it. Let me know if this helps :)

    My steering wheel on my van is loose
    I think the problem you have is the steering assembly being loose.

    To repair this, you must remove the steering wheel and work slowly down the column assembly, removing the indicator switch, ignition switch and other assorted springs and things. Lay out the removed parts in the order and orientation you remove them, take digital pictures or draw sketches at all stages, watch the spring placements. I also unplug the column looms to give you more room by moving the switches away for the area in the column where you are working.

    Once you get far enough down the column you will see the three bolts that are loose, hidden in a sub assembly. I have only been able to tighten two of these over the years. This is a common fault.

    Rebuild the column using the reverse of the order you removed it.
