U should have had the trans serviced, the belts and hoses replaced, the cooling system serviced, a new thermostat and the spark spark plugs replaced at 160,000 km, also air and fuel filters if they haven't been done in the last 30,000 miles or 50,000 Km. right now if all the above was done you should be good to go.

Hi !
200,000 kms is a lot ...
all you need to do is put new piston rings.. this will increase the compression resulting in better performance.

This deal doesn't look very comforting to me..
But as I have not seen the car ...you could be the best judge..

First try replacing air filter if not done recently $30, next consider bad fuel put in fuel from major oil company from station with many patrons. Then you need to look at fuel delivery system including fuel filter and furl pump. But first try the 2 things mentioned.

Take to a autoparts store, they can run the code on the engine diagnostics (autozone will do for free) and point you in a direction. If it is not self-evident, then report back here with the description of the code.

Engine kms

if its been serviced regularly and had all its fluids changed you can get 200,000 plus out of them easily,in melbourne Austraila(where I live)and old guy has a 94 with 345,000 klms seriously and its only had 2 clutches, but its always been serviced properly.Abuse and lack of service they can last 80,000,you must see service history mever take someones word for it,MOST IMPORTANT,i know as ive had 3 or the same car and i love them

Cambelt timing on 2c diesel toyota ,wont idle, smokes

its probably your injectors, does it have over 200,000 kms or been poorly serviced at some time? have you replaced your airfilter? diesel cars also loose compression when their oil is old, and will idle differently and smoke more..

How many km's can a 2001 Alero take before it's a write off?

How long the Alero lasts depends entirely on its service history. I assume you mean it has 195,000 kms which is around 121,000 miles and not 195 kms?

You can use this converter to make conversion comparisons between miles and kilometers.
http://www.derbyshireguide.co.uk/kilometres-into-miles.htm

On any car showing this amount of mileage it is absolutely vital that it has a fully recorded and verifiable service history. If not - walk away plain and simple.
