Check engine light came on Tuesday afternoon, after I filled the gas tank on Monday afternoon. If the check engine light came on because of the gas cap not being on tight enough, do I just tighten the gas cap or do i need to fill up again with gas? Thanks

Check engine light might have came on because of loose gas tank cap, but it's a good idea to read the code and check if it's not something else, you can take your car to an Auto Zone and they read the code for free and tell you the cause also. But if you want to reset the check engine light, only way is to disconnect the battery terminals and let it set overnight, check engine light will be reset. Hope it helps and let me know if you need more advice. Please don't forget to rate the answer it helps with my ratings, thanks!

Diagnose gas tank fill problem

The vent in the filler neck is more than likely sticking. That is if you are having trouble filling the tank up, or if it fills too slow. Also is there a check engine light on? Try and describe the problem when filling tank. ie: tank fills slowly, cannot fill tank, gas splashes back when filling.

Gas tank flap stuck open

if the flap is intact you can try spraying some wd-40 on its hinge. If its missing you need a filler neck for your fuel tank.

Check engine light went on Monday evening when I started my 2004 Hyundai Elantra. I shut it off and tightened the gas cap. That didn't work. It is still on as of Tuesday afternoon.

The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.

When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible system faults (the gas cap is just one of them) that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen/Oriley and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.
