Disconnect the battery, Jack the rear up on stable jack stands. use a smaller jack with a piece of wood to stable the load under the tank. You will see 2 band straps under the tank, remove the bolts, only 1 side have bolts, the other side swings down. The hose from the gas cap will have to be disconnected, which can be !!!!! when in-stalling. you can then drop the gas tank down easily with the jack just a bit, enough to reach around to unplug the fuel pump plug, and the gas lines. Once it's removed, the pump has a big screw on ring, take it off and the fuel pump can be pulled out.

Hello. Your fuel pump is located in the tank. In order to replace it you must first drain ALL fuel from the tank if possible, try HARD. The fuel adds weight to the tank during removal, and creates a danger of fire/etc. After this, remove the banding under the tank by loosing the bolts holding it in place. Drop the tank, disconnect the wires and remove it from under the car. The pump is held in place with small screws that surround the pump. Remove these and the gasket under the pump flange. Reverse order to replace the tank. I hope this helps you. Good Luck, be careful, and thank you for trusting FixYa to help get you going!

Removal & Installation CAUTION If the vehicle is equipped with the Multi-Point Fuel Injection, perform the fuel system pressure release sequence described earlier in this section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If equipped with a fuel injection system, relieve fuel system pressure as outlined in this section.
  3. Remove the fuel filler cap.
  4. Drain the fuel tank.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6. On 1986-91 Comanche models, remove the rear driveshaft.
  7. Tag and disengage all hoses and wires connected to the tank.
CAUTION Wrap heavy shop towels around disconnected fuel lines to absorb spilled fuel. Be prepared to catch any fuel that is not absorbed!

  1. Remove the skid plate, if equipped.
  2. Remove the fuel tank shield.
  3. Support the tank with a floor jack and remove the strap nuts.
  4. Partially lower the tank and disconnect the tank vapor vent hoses.
  5. Remove the tank.
  6. Inspect for rotted or leaking fuel lines.
To install:
  1. Raise the fuel tank into position and connect the vent hose to the filler neck and tighten the clamp.
  2. Wrap the support straps around the fuel tank, tighten them to 100 inch Ibs. (11 Nm). If 3 straps are used, tighten the center strap to 43 inch Ibs. (4 Nm) and the outer straps to 65 inch lbs. (7 Nm).

    Multiport Injection

Loosen the hose clamps and tag the fuel hoses before disconnecting them ...

... then detach the hoses from the fuel pump module/sending unit

Disengage the fuel pump module/sending unit wiring harness connector

        Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the fuel tank filler cap.

Relieve the fuel system pressure as outlined in this section.

Drain the fuel from the fuel tank.

Raise and support the rear end on jackstands.

Remove the fuel inlet and outlet hoses from the sending unit. Be ready to catch any spilled fuel.

                  Disengage the sending unit wires.

The fuel pump module/sending unit retaining ring must be rotated counterclockwise for removal

              8. Using a brass punch and hammer, remove the sending unit retaining lockring by tapping it counterclockwise.

Carefully pull the fuel pump module/sending unit out of the fuel tank-step shown with the fuel tank mounted on the vehicle

Remove and discard the fuel pump module O-ring gasket

Remove the sending unit, which incorporates the electric fuel pump, along with the O-ring seal from the fuel tank. Discard the O-ring.

Remove and discard the pump inlet filter.

Disengage the fuel pump terminal wires.

Remove the pump outlet hose and clamp.

Unfasten the pump top mounting bracket nut and remove the pump.

                      To install:

Install a new inlet filter on the pump.

This is the proper positioning of the fuel pump module assembly inside the fuel tank

Assemble the pump and bracket. Connect the hose and wiring.

Install the unit and new O-ring in the tank. The rubber stopper on the end of the fuel return tube must be inserted into the cup in the fuel tank reservoir.

Install the lockring. Carefully tap it into place until it seats against the stop on the tank.

                                Connect the hoses.

                                  Engage the wiring.

Lower the vehicle, fill the tank, run the engine and check for leaks.

My 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a no start problem. I have tested the fuel pump and it is fine. However, there is no fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

If pump is running, then two other places to look are the fuel filter and regulator. GC of that year may either have regulator on fuel rail and filter in line near l/r wheel, or both as one unit on the tank on top of the sending unit.

Jeep won't go over 60 mph loss of power

Check for a clogged catalytic conveter or weak fuel pump. Remove the O2 sensor so exhaust can flow out hole and test drive it. If it's better replace the cat or look for kinked or dented section of the exhaust. If it didn't help, have the fuel pressure tested as well as the ignition advance and timing chain.
