What is the correct way or speep to shift a 99 Jeep from 4wd back to 2wd?

Try slowly moving the vehicle in reverse and trying to shift back to 2 wd.....do not force.....shift fork damage could occur.....Try slowly moving the vehicle forward as well....Move the shifter firmly but don't force it.......Make sure the hub locks are in the free position too...........

try posting what 4wd system you have,? first.
command trac or select track, (the latter is full time)
part time or the full time system,
we cant guess it....
read the operators guide first, if a part time system only
as i suspect, stop driving on dry pavement.
it's only for ice, or dirt. part time. part time is not a full time system.

shifting to 4wd on dry (means no ice) pavement causes, drive line wind up! and the gears to lockup. (see steering get tight in turns?> and is dangerous to drive it like this , you, me and the box)

NP231 has the following settings: 2HI, 4HI, N, 4LO

• 1987-2001: New Process NP242 Selec-Trac, full-time or part-time, 2.72:1 ratio with low range

NP242 has the following settings: 2HI, 4 full-time, 4 part-time, N, 4LO


as you can see you need to first know, what NP box you have or
photo your shift lever for 4wd, an post it and we tell you.

more facts, on select trac. (totally unlike command trac)
Selec-Trac locking hub is used on 4WD Cherokee. Selec-Trac
utilizes a non-disconnect front axle. Engagement of 2WD or 4WD is
accomplished at transfer case by means of mechanical shift linkage.
System allows full or part time 4WD. Selec-Trac can be shifted into
2WD or 4WD modes from inside the vehicle at any speed.

4WD TO 2WD
1) Place mode select switch in 2WD position. Transfer case
should shift to 2WD and not allow shifting into 4WD or LO range. Axle
should shift after transfer case shifts.
2) To determine if front axle has completed a shift out of
4WD into 2WD, position mode select switch back to 4WD position while
operating vehicle at slow speed. If vehicle shifts into 2WD, axle will
ratchet. If shift is not completed, transfer case will shift into 4WD
and hissing sound will come from mode select switch.

my durango requires me to reverse several feet before it dis engages. i have owned a few and they all do it just back up and it will go back to 2wheel no problem

Just pull the control lever one notch rearward. first position is 2wd, next is "part time 4wd". after that is neutral (only used when your vehicle is being towed) and last is 4 low, only used when pulling heavy loads at low speeds on slippery surfaces. Best to engage 4wd while rolling at under 30mph. If dash light remains on after shifting back to 2wd, usually backing up about twenty feet or so will disengage it.
If doing what I said does not get you into 4wd, then you need to have someone qualified look at it to make sure the transfer case, front differential and both front axles are in good condition.

You can change on the run but as a general rule stop to change to 4wd.except 2wd to 4wd high.Just slow down to about 15mph and back off the gas.
2wd high is normal running
4wd high(is full time 4wd)this is slippery roads or muddy roads.
4wd high lock For bad and slower slippery and rocky roads.
4wd low lock is for extreme 4wd conditions
Don't use the last 2 on the main roads or transfercase will be damaged

you need to have the front axles checked or replaced,they are not freely turning

Assume that is stuck in 4wd, cannot shift back to 2wd. Have you tried shifting to 4wd/Lo and back? Try letting out on the clutch while slowly rolling?

Assume you are manual transmission?

Check fluid in transfer case, make sure it's full and clean. Lube all external linkage and make sure it's adjusted correctly. Chances are there's a bit of wear in t-case components. When this happens sometimes rolling shifts are easier on unit.

Stick it in 2wd. Now back it up a good bit. Now pull it forward. Now make a turn. If it lurches, then repeat.

After this, check your tires. If the tires are different sizes. or the front is worn more than the rear, or even if they're different manufacturers, or if the tire pressure is low, then these could all be reasons that the transfer case is getting confused and is finding it hard to come out of 4wd.

This is assuming that the transfer case is in good working order and has the correct amount and type of fluid in it.
