The ac pump has a clutch coil,it is activated with the ac button, and then the middle of the pulley will turn this is the clutch,it only turns with the ac on,then when it is turned off,the pulley just turns not the whole clutch,so this is normal.

The easiest way to replace serpentine \ drive V belt on 2007-2012 Nissan Altima 2.5L 4 cylinders engine:
- remove front wheel on passenger side
- remove plastic splash cover
- user 14mm offset wrench to turn belt auto-tensioner in clockwise direction
- block auto-tensioner from moving using locking mechanism right above the auto-tensioner pulley
- slide the belt off the smooth non-grooved water pump pulley first
and then take the belt completely out
- when installing a new serpentine belt, first hook it onto all pulleys except for water pump pulley. Hook it onto the water pump pulley last
- make sure the new belt is hooked up properly onto all of the pulleys
- unlock the auto-tensioner

I started my 2005 Taurus, heard a high pitched whining sound and saw smoke rising from under the hood. Haven't started it since, and am going to have it towed to a dealership. I'm not a mechanic...

  • Hi, I can help.

  • Sounds to me like the "whining" was a stuck pulley and the smoke was from the serpentine belt smoking. The alternator, AC compressor, Power Steering Pump, Water Pump and the Tentioner are all pulleys that are driven by the serpentine belt. When one of the em pulleys lock up the belt is still pulled by all the other pulleys and smokes out on the stuck pulley.

  • This video here will give you the best visual on how to remove your serpentine belt (simple really)

  • Once you remove the serpentine belt start turning pulleys. They should spin free with no hangups. If the belt smoked then one of the pulleys is probably really stuck and won't move at all. When you find the stuck pulley that part will need to be replaced as a whole. In other words if your alternator pulley locked up then the alternator will need replaced.

  • This would be the first thing I would look at, given what you explained as to what happened.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

Replace alternator

The alternator belt on the 1999 Dodge Caravan also controls the air conditioner compressor, the water pump and the power steering pump. The belt is called a serpentine belt, and it is designed to fit around all of the accessory pulleys at the same time. As the belt travels around each accessory pulley, it enables the accessory to operate. Once the belt is damaged, cracked or frayed, you should change it before it breaks. If that happens, each of the accessories will stop working.

Open the hood and prop it up so that it does not fall. Engage the parking brake.

Inspect the top surface of the fan shroud for the serpentine belt routing diagram. Follow the routing instructions on the diagram to install the new belt.

Locate the serpentine belt self-adjusting tensioner on the front of the engine. The tensioner is directly below the alternator. Use the bolt that connects the tensioner pulley to the tensioner arm to rotate the tensioner.

Turn the tensioner device counterclockwise to move the tensioner. This will relieve the tension from the belt. Once the belt has enough slack in it, slide the belt out from under the tensioner pulley.

Lift the belt off each accessory pulley. Slide the belt around the fan blades and out of the engine area.

Lay the old belt next to the new belt to ensure that the new belt is the correct width and length. Slide the belt around the fan blades and around the crankshaft pulley on the bottom of the engine.

Follow the belt routing diagram to position the belt around the air conditioner compressor pulley, the power steering pump pulley, the water pump pulley and the idler pulley. Once the belt is routed inside each accessory pulley, inspect the belt to make sure that it is securely inside the pulleys.

Crank the 1999 Dodge Caravan for 10 to 15 seconds to completely seat the belt ribs in the grooves on each accessory pulley. Shut the engine off and close the hood.

If the belt routing diagram for the 1999 Dodge Caravan is missing, use a pen and a notepad to draw the exact routing of the old belt and use it when installing the new belt.

Every time I turn on the air or heat when the car is running My power steering iseffected and a loud screech? But not when the car not running (blower motor works) I think it is the ac condencer?

you need to replace the serpentine belt and perhaps the belt tensioner. When a heavy load is put on the belt, like turning on the AC, the drag may stop the belt from turning. This would stop the power steering pump from turning causing a hard steer condition. The belt is not gripping the pulleys tight enough. This is due to a worn out serpentine belt or worn out tensioner. If the AC works( cools the car) then replace the belt. If this does not cure the problem then replace the belt tensioner as well.

I was driving my 1999 Saab 9-5 today, it was raining, right after going through a puddle, my power steering stopped working, the battery light came on, so I pulled into a gas station, turned the engine...

LOL, nooooooo. You didn't hurt anything. In fact, you identified a problem by going through that puddle. You need a new serpentine belt and/or tensioner pulley. It sounds like the spring in your tensioner pulley may be worn, and not pulling your serpentine belt tight enough. Now, THAT being said, there MAY be yet another issue going on. While I don't doubt for a minute that you need 1) a new serp. belt, 2) a new tensioner pulley, and 3) a can of belt dressing, you may also want to check (while the old serp belt is off during the changing) that all your pulleys are spinning freely. Especially your AC compressor pulley. If your AC is low on refridgerant, it can lock up the pulley. The serp belt drives your power steering pump, your alternator, your AC pump, water pump, etc. If one pulley siezes up, the tensioner is weak, and the belt gets wet, NOTHING will turn. Hence the dead battery (alternator not turning), no power steering (pump not turning), and more importantly no coolant circulation (water pump not turning), which can cause serious overheating problems.

How do i release the tension belt ... cant seem to find bolt being referred to in other docs

Here's the procedure on how to release and replace the tension belt of your car.

Step 1
  • Open the hood on the Volvo S-60 and find the serpentine-belt routing diagram. The diagram should be attached to the top of the fan shroud that covers the radiator. If not, draw out the exact routing method of the serpentine belt around each pulley with a pen and a piece of paper.
  • Step 2 Locate the serpentine-belt tensioner that is in the very center of the engine. The tensioner will have a square bolt head in the center of the tensioner pulley.
  • Step 3 Slide the open end of the 5/8-wrench onto the square bolt head in the center of the belt-tensioner pulley. Turn the tensioner pulley counterclockwise and slide the serpentine belt off of the tensioner pulley.
  • Step 4 Remove the serpentine belt from the other pulleys and pull the belt out of the engine compartment.
  • Step 5 Slide the new serpentine belt into the engine compartment and around the crankshaft pulley.
  • Step 6 Route the new serpentine belt around each pulley. Turn the belt-tensioner pulley counterclockwise again and slide the serpentine belt around the tensioner pulley. Release the tensioner and it will tighten the belt around the pulleys. Look over the belt to ensure that it is inside of each pulley.
  • Step 7 Crank the S-60 and look over the serpentine belt with the motor running. Let the engine run for about one minute and shut the engine off. Close the hood.
