I am installing a timing belt on a 1987 Volvo 240. I need to know how to time the Crank, cam and distributor. Thanks

Camshaft pulley has a notch which lines up with notch on cam cover at approx 11o'clock, crankshaft marks also approx 11 o'clock and the aux shaft for distributer has marks at 9o'clock

no you check the tip of the rotor lines up with the edge of the cutout on your distributor body .that is the basic adjustment. you move the distributor very small amounts when adjusting the dwell angle when you use the timing light.

Yes, the crank will spin a few times to each rotation of the rotor. If you have the timing belt on, you should be able to crank the engine with the starter. Just make sure you take the spark wire off the coil first so it wont start. Also make sure you lined up the marks on the crank and cam sprockets or you may have serious timing issues.
The engine is fairly hard to turn over with normal length socket wrenches. I use a breaker bar.

1982 volvo 240 gl doesn't a have any spark, ive replaced distributor, coil, ingnition switch, and fuses checked the timing car was running exellent before all this. i just dont know where to go from here?

Hi,

You will need to check the crank angle sensor which is on bell housing of the gerbox and also check that the cam timing sensor is working also. This is positioned on the front of the motor on the timing chain cover. Let me know if you need further assistance.

1994 Volvo 940 Station Wagon timing belt

I hope you've solved the problem by now, but there are alignment marks on the crank shaft (top pulley), idler (lower side), and cam shaft (smaller, bottom pulley) which should be aligned with stationary marks on the timing belt rear cover.

The belt has marks that align with the aforementioned marks (lines). The double marks on the belt align with the camshaft marks and the single marks with the others.

Loosen the tensioner clamp (nut) to allow the spring loaded tensioner to press on the belt and retighten the nut.

Rotate the crank shaft (clockwise, probably two revolutions) and make sure the pulley marks realign to the marks on the cover (they don't have to realign with the marks on the belt).

Rotate the crank shaft a full revolution once the belt is on and check that alignment is preserved.

Periodically loosen and retension the tensioner nut (access through a hole in the cover) to ensure that tension is maintained as the belt relaxes.
