MY TACOMA IS APPROACHING 100,000 MILES. IT'S A 2006 AND WILL NOT GO INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE. THE GREEN 4X4 SYMBOL FLASHES. THE LAST TIME I HAD IT IN 4X4 MODE; I HEARD A LITTLE CLUNK WHEN I TOOK IT OFF OF 4X4 MODE. WHAT HAPPENED AND WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO FIX IT? IT IS AN EXPENSIVE AND TECHNICAL JOB? SHOULD I JUST GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY?

SOURCE: 2006 Toyota Tacoma Low Mileage or Not...Spark Plug Life

24 mpg on the highway is actually pretty good for that truck. at 48000 miles and being 3 years old its time for plugs, air filter, and fuel filter if available. thats cheap maintenance for now. but if very self conscious, run some fuel injector cleaner first, then change the plugs, because any octane booster or fuel injector cleaner can run the risk of fouling out a plug, by creating a hotter spark then what, normal gas does. the burn is hotter.

SOURCE: Dealer wants to replace plugs at 30,000 miles on '06 tacoma V-6

it's better safe than sorry, if you replace the plugs every 30,000 miles it's only going to cost you about $120 over the life of the vehicle.

SOURCE: Check Engine Light came on while driving. No

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. The check engine light is on because ECM (Control Module) detected a fault with your car's system. ECM has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and your car needs to be looked at. You'll need to get the codes checked from a nearby dealer/mechanic. Please revert with the codes so that I can tell you where exactly the issue is.

Please do rate the solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Rylee

I have a 2003 Tacoma 4x4 extra cab w/v6 & manual transmission. The truck has 71k and a new frame. Last February the four wheel drive was working fine when I took it out to turn around in a small space...

I had the same problem on a 1996 Tacoma 4x4 and the trouble was the solenoid valves on the inner fender liner drivers side. It is an electrically controlled vacuum switch that controls the switch on the transfer case. Not sure if yours is the same ?

Change clutch

Sounds like transfer case issue if 4 wheel drive works and 2 wd does not. Clutch slippage would be worse in 4 wheel drive more than 2 wheel drive, more to push.

What is my maintenence schedule ?

I woud replace the fluids, including the brake fluid. Be sure to use the correct fluids, follow the FORD specs. Yes the spark plugs are a big issue. Be sure the mechanic knows what he's doing, if not, have the Ford dealer replce them, Special tools are involved because the end of the spark plugs break off in the head and they will need to be removed. Expect to pay BIG BUCKS. This alone is the reason I will never own a Ford Truck.

Steering wheel shakes above 40mph, what could be wrong 2006 f250 4x4 crew cab stock tires and wheels 100,000 miles also not much response in steering above 55mph

the wheel shaking sounds like a wheel balancing problem and the no steering response is either some loose ball joints or a bad gear it will need to go to the shop for both
