This morning I opened my trunk to my 2055 Pontiac Sunfire and when I went to close it the black casing around the latch on the frame of the car came off so I put it back on and when I went to close the truck it will not latch. It is almost like I need to pull on something so that it will latch.

You may have inadvertently locked the latch when putting the plastic piece back on look at the latch mechanism and where the latch locks on the bar put a screw driver in the latch mechanism and then operate the lat to open it should open up then try shutting the trunk lid do it with the plastic piece off first to be sure thats the problem because if you have the plastic piece on you may make it nearly impossible to open it up. Then if it works put the plastic piece back on then make sure the latch is open and then close it does it work? if yes you did it if not write back to me for more help. Thanks for using fix-ya.

This happened all the time on my 03, take two plyers, one in each hand and put them both onto the u-bolt (the part that the latch latches to) and pull up then try and close the trunk, sometimes the latch pushes that ubolt platform down so it cant grab

Cant get the trunk open

Try pressing down on the trunk hard while turning the key. Maybe that will help release. Also pull up hard in case the trunk is hanging up. If all that fails fold down the seat and
with a flashlight and screwdiver ,work your way to latch and have someone on the outside operate the latch to see whats happening

I have a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire. The trunk will not lock/latch. When I have the trunk lid open, i can get it to lock with my fingers but cannot get it to latch when it is shut, how do i fix it?

Mine also had this problem within the first few months of ownership. I took it to the dealership and they said it was a "known issue" with the latching mechanism. They used some type of tool to pull the latch forward and it worked like a charm. It was free of charge at a Pontiac Dealership. Hope this helps.

Latch on '96 Maxima will not lock and stay locked

Yes if your lock actuator is not stuck on unlock.Try unpluging the harness to rhe electric lock, and see if it will lock and stay locked using the key.If ti works then your okay.if you still have the problem then your tounge that holds the trunk down needs to be replaced.

My trunk won't close.

Is the trunk latch in the "locked" position?

Lift the trunk lid and look where the latch is, right in the center. The lower part (on the car) is a square metal loop, and the latch part (on the lid) has a slot that fits over that loop with an inner part to grab on to the loop.

If the latch is blocking the slot, then it won't close. The solution in this case is to take your keys and turn them as though you were opening the trunk. This should release the latch so the slot is clear.

Good luck!

2003 pontiac sunfire trunk won't close

See if you can make the latch work by just using a screw driver in the slot to lock it, then open it with the key. If that works ok, you will need to raise the striker and align it to the latch.

01 Sunfire trunk lock

You can get an entire latch assembly at any local junkyard for not too many $. When installing use scar marks and dirt around bolts on the trunk lid to locate the latch properly.
