It has a belt. If cracked, replace it immediately! Go to Matthews Volvo Site and look for: 99' S80 T6 Cam Seal Replacement/ Oil Leak Repair,Timing,PCV

Look forthe tube going from the radiator to the engine and follov it. By the engine it wil be connected to the tray, in wich is located thermostat. Usually it is not bigerthan an apple. Its cap is hold with 3 or 2 screws. Probably you will need spanner on 10 or 12. Take off the cap and remember how the old thermostat is loceted and in the same position put in the new one.

b4 you change it you can check it with a voltage meter to see if it is bad or not you may have a problem somewhere else

If you are talking about the thermo electric cooling fan, its operation is independent of the car's electical system. It is switched on and off by the engine temperature. When you park, the engine heat soaks upward to heat the thermostat turning the fan on. It will run until the engine cools down and the thermostat switches it off.

disconnect the battery for 5 minutes or use a scan tool, the scan tool is prefered method.
